Triumph in Hollywood: Four OSCARS® for ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
The German entry ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT by Edward Berger (Amusement Park Film) made history at the 95th Academy Awards®, being one of the two big winners at the Dolby Cinema in Hollywood, Los Angeles last night.
Nominated in nine categories, the anti-war film took the coveted trophy in four categories, including International Feature Film, Cinematography, Original Score and Production Design. In this way, its winning streak continued after seven accolades at the British Academy Film & Television Awards (BAFTA).
"This is a milestone in the almost 100-year history of the Oscar® ceremony. The impressive total of four Oscars® for the film is not only a sign of the outstanding quality of German filmmaking on the international stage, but also indicative of recognition and appreciation for a cinematic work whose political message remains timeless, never losing its explosive quality," in the words of Simone Baumann, Managing Director of German Films.
The coveted Oscar® trophy in the International Feature Film category has gone to Germany twice in the last 25 years: to NOWHERE IN AFRICA by Caroline Link in 2002 and to THE LIVES OF OTHERSby Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck in 2007.
In August 2022, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT was selected by an independent selection committee appointed by German Films as the German entry in the International Feature Film category. German Films is not represented on the selection committee and does not determine its composition; this is the responsibility of the associations represented on the committee.
About the film:
This German novel is a classic of world literature; published in 1928, it draws its authenticity and impact from author Erich Maria Remarque’s own wartime experiences. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT tells the gripping story of a young German soldier on the western front during World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches.
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is a production by Amusement Park Film in co-production with Gunpowder Films and in association with Sliding for Netflix. The film celebrated its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival on 12 September 2022. Netflix cooperated with its distribution partner 24 Bilder for the film’s nationwide cinema release in Germany on September 29, 2022. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT opened in US cinemas in October and has been available on Netflix since October 28, 2022, where it is one of the global top 10 non-English language film titles.
