THE NATURAL STORY OF DESTRUCTION by Sergei Loznitsa celebrates its world premiere in Cannes!

The 75th Cannes International Film Festival (May 17-28, 2022) announced the films of their Sélection Officielle at today's press conference. A total of 47 titles were included in the selection.

The documentary THE NATURAL HISTORY OF DESTRUCTION by Sergei Loznitsa (DE/LT/NL, LOOKS Filmproduktionen) will have its world premiere in the Special Screening section.

Sergei Loznitsa is a well-known film director and screenwriter who’s first feature film MY JOY (MEIN GLÜCK), a German-Ukrainian co-production, was presented in Cannes’ competition in 2010. His film BABYN JAR. also premiered in the Special Screening section at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2021.

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF DESTRUCTION is Sergei Loznitsa’s third film, which focusses on the European history of the 20th century and the memory of the greatest tragedies of that time - inspired by W.G. Sebald's text "Luftkrieg und Literatur“, which means "Air War and Literature". Sebald describes the phenomenon of mass extermination of German civilians and German cities by massive Allied air raids during World War II.

Loznitsa's film attempts to gain an idea of the extent of the destruction of German cities during World War II due to preserved film footage and encourages to reflect on the trauma and silence associated with this destruction.
