Germany in focus at Göteborg Film Festival

News

The Göteborg Film Festival is once again one of the first festivals on the calendar this year, taking place from January 23 to February 1, 2026. At the 49th edition of the largest film festival in the Nordic countries, Germany will be the focus country of the Nordic Film Market and TV Drama Vision, which will be presented as part of the Göteborg Film Festival.

The Göteborg Film Festival is the leading film festival in the Nordic countries and has one of the largest festival audiences worldwide. As the most important industry gathering in the region, the festival attracts more than 2,400 accredited guests from over 50 countries. This year's edition of the festival includes 266 films from 76 countries. From a German perspective, 35 productions and co-productions will be shown in various sections.

KARLA by Christina Tournatzès will be screened in the Ingmar Bergman Competition. The festival's competition section showcases innovative debuts in the spirit of Ingmar Bergman. The drama KARLA is set in 1962 and tells the story of 12-year-old Karla, who grows up in a world where children are expected to be quiet – especially girls. Based on a true court case, the film tells the story of a girl who begins to speak up for herself – and in doing so gives others a voice too.

Other sections feature German films that attracted attention at major international festivals last year. For example, the Masters section will screen AMRUM by Fatih Akin, which premiered in Cannes, and SILENT FRIEND by Ildiko Enyedi, which was shown in Venice.

Films from around the world come together in the Voyage section, including five productions from Germany. On display here are ALL THAT'S LEFT OF YOU by Cherien Dabis, COTTON QUEEN by Suzannah Mirghani, DRY LEAF by Alexandre Koberidze, RAVE ON by Nikias Chryssos & Viktor Jakovleski, and SILENT FLOOD by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk.

The Focus: Truth section shows films that approach truth from different perspectives. It's about what happens when truth is distorted or loses its meaning. Two German productions deal with the topic in different ways. Director Andreas Pichler will present his film ELON MUSK UNVEILED – THE TESLA EXPERIMENT in person in Göteborg and will be available for a Q&A after the screening. The second German film in the section is THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JOSEF MENGELE by Kirill Serebrennikov.

Unique cinematic voices that challenge their audiences and break new ground in film art can be found in the Visionaries section. The German productions WITH HASAN IN GAZA by Kamal Aljafari and EUPHORIA by Julian Rosefeldt will also be screened there. Julian Rosefeldt will also be in Göteborg to discuss his film in a Q&A session.

The Nordic Film Market is the world's leading marketplace for Nordic films and an important meeting place for the international industry. Germany will be the focus of the 27th edition. German producers, funds, and key decision-makers will come to Göteborg to forge new connections and deepen cooperation between the audiovisual ecosystems of the Nordic countries and Germany. The Nordic Film Market offers high-caliber business-to-business opportunities and networking. TV Drama Vision, dedicated to drama series, brings together international business trends, creative talent, and key professionals.
The German Focus is organized in collaboration with German Films and national and regional funds in Germany.
