13 German productions and co-productions in competition categories at San Sebastian

News

San Sebastian is hosting its 73rd International Film Festival this year. From September 19 to 27, 2025, over 250 films will be shown in six competition categories and seven non-competitive sections in the Basque city. A total of 15 German productions and co-productions will be represented at the festival, and four work-in-progress projects with German participation will also be presented in the industry section.

The competition categories in San Sebastian include Official Selection, New Directors, Horizontes Latinos, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, Perlak, and Nest. The majority German production THE GOOD SISTER by Sarah Miro Fischer celebrated its world premiere at this year's Berlinale and was screened in the Discoveries section at the New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw. In San Sebastian, director Sarah Miro Fischer's debut film can now be seen in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section. The drama is about a close sibling relationship that is put to a difficult moral test.

Nest is the competition section for short films in San Sebastian. This year, the film LIFE IS LIKE THAT AND NOT OTHERWISE. by Lenia Friedrich, which deals with aging and growing older, will be shown there, as well as ONLY MAKING OUT by Marlon Weber. It is about the encounter of two characters at dusk before a third person joins them.

A total of 13 German productions and co-productions are represented in the six competition sections in San Sebastian.

Out of competition in the Children's Films section, the two German films GRAND PRIX OF EUROPE by Waldemar Fast and HEIDI - RESCUE OF THE LYNX by Toby Schwarz are in the line-up. Both films have already enjoyed international success and can be seen in cinemas in numerous territories.

After competing for the Golden Shell last year with CONCLAVE, German director Edward Berger will once again be represented in the Official Selection in the main competition category with BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER, a UK production starring Colin Farrell.

The WIP Europe initiative will run during the festival from September 22 to 24. The Work in Progress section is aimed at films that are in post-production and are predominantly European productions. The German production FEBRUARY, SEVEN DAYS is the feature film debut of Ukrainian short film maker Tatjana Moutchnik, which shows the reunion of two Ukrainian siblings in Stuttgart after the Russian invasion, on the occasion of their mother's funeral.

Iranian filmmaker Massih Parsaei presents LOVERS SLEEP ALONE, produced at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, about a young Iranian exile who ekes out a living doing precarious jobs in Berlin.
