NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023 AT DRESDEN AND CANNES

Directors and crew members of the selected shorts presented their works and mingled with the festival guests during numerous industry networking events. One of the highlights was the awards ceremony at the Lingnerschloss for the German Federal Film Board's (FFA) Short Tiger Award for the best short films up to 5 minutes that are particularly suitable for programming as supporting films in cinemas.

This year's awards went to Oleksandra Krasavtseva for her animated poetry film HUGE CHOICE and to Eugenia Bakurin for the found-footage experimental LONG TIME NO TECHNO. At the program's premiere on April 22, the audience had the chance to discover the most promising young filmmakers from German film schools. With their films, they show evidence of the creativity, willingness to experiment while telling relevant stories transcending place and generation.

The next big highlight for the filmmakers and their films is the traditional screening at the Festival des Cannes' Marché du Film on Tuesday, May 23 (6:45 pm at Olympia 2). The program will then go on tour around the globe at the Festivals of the German Films. The films were selected by the jury members Katrin Küchler (MDR/unicato), Sophie Linnenbaum (director) and Dr. Christian Bräuer (managing director Yorck-Kinos). This year, one film from the selection, the animation PRIMITIVE TIMES by Hao Yu will first celebrate its international premiere at the Festival des Cannes' Official Selection of the La Cinef Competition and will only be presented as part of the program afterwards.

More information about the films and directors of this year's NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER program is available here. Industry professionals can either screen the films on the Festivalscope Pro and T-Port platforms if they are registered, or they can request a screening link from nextgeneration@german-films.de The FFA Short Tiger winners can be booked by German cinemas as supporting films through the Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg.

KINO! FILM SALON: WINGS OF DESIRE (DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN) BY WIM WENDERS

Wim Wenders received the Golden Palm for Best Director at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1987. The film marked Wenders’ “homecoming” and was his first German film after eight years in the United States. In 1988, the film was awarded  the European Film Prize (Best Director; Best Supporting Actor: Curt Bois) and the German Film Award in Gold (Best Full-length Feature Film; Best Cinematography Henri Alekan).

Our curator Jim Kolmar selected this movie: “Justifiably lauded as a modern masterpiece, Wim Wenders’ 1987 film WINGS OF DESIRE earns its place in the canon of cinema art from the luminous opening frames. Essentially a fantasy, the film offers a simple premise - angels watching over Berlin are privy to the innermost thoughts of its occupants. However, the magic of WINGS OF DESIRE lies in its ability to articulate the nuances of relatable, sometimes painful, human emotion.

Capturing a vision of Berlin only a couple of years before Europe saw radical changes, Wenders’ film builds into a near operatic impression of the city, and perhaps the planet, as a place of love, loss, contemplation and melancholy. It’s an indelible, extraordinary achievement.“

Wim Wenders will return to Cannes this year with his new 3D documentary ANSELM, featuring famous German artist Anselm Kiefer – presented as a Special Screening.
