This special anniversary edition opened with Germany's entry for the Oscars® and winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes SOUND OF FALLING, in the presence of director Mascha Schilinski and producer Lucas Schmidt. The film attracted so much interest that in addition to the major 400-seat room, which was sold-out, we had to open the room next to it with another 94 seats. RECAP FRANCO-GERMAN FILM MEETING PARIS

The 23rd edition of the Franco-German Filmmeeting took place at the Goethe-Institut in Paris on October 8 and 9, 2025. Over 200 French and German film professionals came together for two intense days of exchange on the current challenges of co-production and story development.

In addition to inspiring keynotes by speakers such as Juliette Prissard (Eurocinema), Christoph Friedel (Pandora Film), Antoine Boilley (Arcom), and Franziska Hansel (Storybook Studios), participants also gained insights into the production of SOUND OF FALLING and THE LITTLE SISTER through fascinating case studies presented by the producers. The program also included engaging panels on independent production, respectful production practices, and an update on the film funding reform in Germany.

As in previous years, German Films and Unifrance, in collaboration with and supported by the DFJW/OFAJ, also enabled five German and five French students to take part in the Film Meeting through the PREMIERE program.

While the first day of the Film Meeting concluded with the opening of the Festival of German Films in Paris at Cinéma L’Arlequin, followed by the Atelier Network Party, the second day ended with a flying dinner and a cruise on the Seine. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored its student winners from colleges and universities around the world at the 52st Student Academy Awards® ceremony.  Gold, Silver and Bronze placements were announced and trophies presented during a ceremony held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City, in partnership with Rolex. This year, the Student Academy Awards competition received 3,127 entries from 988 colleges and universities worldwide.

YUNAN WINS THE ARAB CRITICS' AWARD FOR EUROPEAN FILMS

Ameer Fakher Eldin’s second feature film YUNAN, a co-production between Germany, Canada, Italy, Palestine, Qatar, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, has won this year’s Arab Critics' Award for European Films. The award, now in its seventh edition, is presented by European Film Promotion (EFP) in collaboration with the Arab Cinema Center (ACC).

The announcement was made during the award ceremony at El Gouna Film Festival on the evening of 18 October. Director Ameer Fakher Eldin, who was unfortunately unable to attend the festival in person, sent a video message in which he thanked the jury, the ACC, and EFP for what he called a “beautiful recognition.” He added: “To see YUNAN now embraced by Arab critics as well feels profoundly moving to me. In a way, maybe it means the film has finally found its way home.” Fakher Eldin also expressed his gratitude to his main producer and longtime collaborator Dorothe Beinemeier (Red Balloon Film), who accepted the award on-site in El Gouna: “YUNAN is Ameer Fakher Eldin's second feature film. Like his first film THE STRANGER, it is a slow, silent and melancholic piece. Ameer’s stories are not loud but told in the most subtle and poetic ways and are deeply touching. His films slow me down, they force me to take time and think and digest what I see. His films seem to transform every time I watch them. But what happens is that the films are so rich that I just find a new angle every time, another layer. Ameer is just a brilliant observer and storyteller, a very old and wise soul in a young man’s body. I am very much looking forward to producing the third film of our trilogy.“

The Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films was launched in 2019 by EFP and the ACC. It is a spin-off from the ACC’s well-established Critics' Awards to boost the diversity of films in the region and raise the interest of distribution companies and the industry for outstanding European films. The initiative also casts a spotlight onto distinguished film critics from Arab-speaking countries and their important role of introducing new perspectives and bridging cultural differences and characteristics.

Previous winners have included GOD EXISTS, HER NAME IS PETRUNYA by Teona Strugar Mitevska (2019), UNDINE by Christian Petzold (2020), 107 MOTHERS by Peter Kerekes (2021), EO by Jerzy Skolimowski (2022), FALLEN LEAVES by Aki Kaurismäki (2023) and THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG by Mohammad Rasoulof (2024).

SAMIRAH BREUER IS THE BLACK NIGHTS STAR AT PÖFF

German actor Samirah Breuer has been selected as one of the Black Nights Stars 2025 of PÖFF - Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, spotlighting her as a rising talent.

Samirah Breuer is a German-American actress based in Berlin. She discovered her passion for acting early on, performing in school theatre and attending a youth acting school in Cologne. After training at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City, she began building a versatile screen career in Germany, recently expanding her work to the stage. Since 2022, Samirah has taken on roles across a wide range of genres. She joined the cast of the award-winning comedy DIE DISCOUNTER by Bruno Alexander, Emil Belton, and Oskar Belton, which won the German Screen Actors Award for Best Ensemble. She then went on to star in Prime Video’s fantasy series THE GRYPHON by Sebastian Marka. Most recently, she captivates audiences as Olivia in Apple TV+’s medical drama BERLIN ER, directed by Alex Schaad and Fabian Möhrke, for which she has been nominated for the German Screen Actors Award in the category "Best Duo". In 2024, she took on the lead role in the coming-of-age thriller series SCHATTENSEITE, directed by Özgür Yildirim and Alison Kuhn, which premiered at this year's Munich International Film Festival. In addition to her screen work, Samirah recently made her stage debut at the Volksbühne Berlin in WEISSE WITWE, directed by Kudwin Ayub, while studying psychology at Humboldt University Berlin.

Black Nights Stars is a program launched by the Black Nights Film Festival in 2017. It is designed to help young actors from the Baltic Sea region—Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland—gain international visibility and promote themselves inside and outside their home territories.

Chosen from more than 200 applicants, the participants will join an intensive program of workshops, panels and networking events, aimed at preparing them for work on the international stage. The eight actors will be in Tallinn from November 18-22, meeting with casting directors, talent agents, producers and directors and participating in workshops, panels and networking events. Each actor will receive the Black Nights Stars Discovery Campus ICDA award.

KINO! FILM SALON: PINA (3D) by Wim Wenders

The focus of the next session for the English-language KINO! FILM SALON online film club on November 16th will be PINA (3D) by Wim Wenders. Wenders' masterpiece celebrated its world premiere at Berlin International Film Festival in 2011 and was Germany's Official Entry to the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Awards in 2012.

Our curator Jim Kolmar's comment on the movie: "Wim Wenders has never been one to rest on his creative laurels and his kaleidoscopic, genre-bending portrait of legendary choreographer and dance visionary Pina Bausch pushes the boundaries of documentary form further than anyone expected. Conceived as a 3D experience, PINA eschews conventional plot and narrative structure, favoring a more organic representation of Pina’s strikingly choreographed sequences. Between them, they fill the screen with extraordinary images that are perhaps the closest cinema has ever come to truly conveying the spirit, joy and artistry of dance.  Sadly, Bausch wouldn’t survive to see the completed version of PINA, a film that vividly celebrates her legacy and further confirms Wenders as one of the great filmmakers of our time."

RSVP here

Date and time: Sunday, November 16th at 11:00am – 12:00pm PT, 2:00pm – 3:00pm ET, 8:00pm – 9:00pm CET.
Hosted by Jim Kolmar

KINO! FILM SALON is a production by Telescope Film, in collaboration with the German Film Office
