TWO GERMAN SHORTS AMONG STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS® FINALISTS

On August 17, 2023, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the finalists of this year’s 50th edition of the Student Academy Awards®, selected from 63 semifinalists in four categories. Both German semifinalists in the ”Narrative“ category made it into the final selection of eight award candidates: ISTINA (TRUTH) by Tamara Denić (writer: David M. Lorenz; producer: Christian Siée) and THOSE WHO FOLLOW (MITLÄUFER) by Frederic Kau (screenplay: Nick Buckenauer, Frederic Kau; producer: Laurian-Luis Schymura), both graduation films from the Hamburg Media School.

In ISTINA (TRUTH) an investigative photo journalist from Serbia is threatened by right-wing groups and decides to escape to Germany with her daughter.

THOSE WHO FOLLOW is about a young member of the German special forces who is torn between loyalty to his family and his unit.

The winners of the three awards in the category will be published end of September. The awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles in October.

KINO! FILM SALON: THE WHITE RIBBON (DAS WEISSE BAND) by MICHAEL HANEKE

The focus of the next session for the English-language KINO! FILM SALON online film club on September 10 will be Michael Haneke’s masterpiece  THE WHITE RIBBON. The film celebrated its world premiere at Cannes International Film Festival and was awarded the Golden Palm for Best Picture. The film won numerous awards:  European Film Award 2009 (Best Director, Best Screenwriter), Golden Globe 2010 (Best Foreign Language Film), German Film Awards 2010 (Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Direction, Best Leading Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Make-Up, Best Sound). Also, the film received an Oscar® nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

Our curator Jim Kolmar selected this movie: “Michael Haneke's THE WHITE RIBBON is an extraordinary examination of authoritarian violence in a rural German village on the precipice of World War I. The film features intricate breakout performances by Leonie Benesch and Leonard Proxauf, alongside veterans like Burghart Klaußner, all rendered with lustrous monochrome imagery reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman's best work. The effect feels almost like a fairytale, as dark as pitch.

Haneke's characteristic sense of control, immaculate visual sensibility and unrelenting attention to detail make The White Ribbon a modern masterpiece, easily deserving of its numerous awards.“

We’ll be hosting the Salon live from the Toronto International Film Festival and have a special guest star, Leonie Benesch (European Shooting Star 2023), who is starring in THE TEACHERS‘ LOUNGE by Ilker Çatak, which is presented in the TIFF Centrepiece section and is the German OSCAR® entry in the category BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM FEATURE FILM.

You may know her from the series BABYLON BERLIN or THE CROWN, or from the feature film THE WHITE RIBBON, which is the film we’ll be discussing.
