GERMAN CINEMA ABROAD – FACTS AND FIGURES


The first half of 2021 saw 196 German films (majority and minority productions) generating international box office totalling 19.6 million Euros and attracting more than 3.6 million cinema-goers around the globe.

A detailed analysis of the international figures for the first six months of 2021 will be available on the German Films website from mid-September.

LOCARNO: SUCCESS FOR GERMAN PRODUCTIONS


Saskia Rosendahl won the Best Actress Leopard for her role in Sabrina Sarabi's film NO ONE'S WITH THE CALVES, while Abel Ferrara won Best Director for ZEROS AND ONES (DE/UK/US), which was executive produced by the Germany's Maze Pictures.

German short films also did exceedingly well at the festival on the shores of Lake Maggiore: Nicolaas Schmidt's FIRST TIME (THE TIME FOR ALL BUT SUNSET - VIOLET) and STEAKHOUSE (SI/DE/FR) by Špela Čadež both received a Special Mention in the Leopards of Tomorrow's International Competition, while DEAR TO ME (DE/ID) by Monica Vanesa Tedja was given the same honour in the Open Door Shorts section.

Other awards went to the two co-productions HEAVENS ABOVE by Srdjan Dragojevic (RS/DE/MK/SI/HR/ME/BA) and WHETHER THE WEATHER IS FINE by Carlos Francisco Manatad (PH/FR/DE).

GERMAN FILMS AT THE 46TH TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL


The German titles screening at Toronto's 2021 edition will include Maria Schrader's award-winning and rather different kind of romantic comedy I'M YOUR MAN which will be shown in the Special Presentations section. Pablo Larraín's Princess Diana biopic SPENCER (DE/GB) is being presented as a Special Event at the renowned Canadian festival following its world premiere in Venice. The co-production was realised on the German side by Komplizen Film and features Hollywood star Kristen Stewart in the lead role as Lady Di.

Festival-goers will also be able to catch the Indonesian director Edwin's Golden Leopard winner VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH (ID/SG/DE) in the Contemporary World Cinema sidebar.

TIFF Docs will present Daniel Carsenty and Mohammed Abugeth's film THE DEVIL'S DRIVERS (DE/QA/FR/LB) where the two filmmakers spent eight years following two Bedouin people smugglers as they go about their dangerous business across the Negev Desert.

THE CAPACITY FOR ADEQUATE ANGER by Vika Kirchenbauer is also representing Germany in the line-up of shorts being presented in the Wavelengths sidebar known for its artistic-experimental works.

In addition to the films in the official programme, German Films is offering international industry accredited professionals further German films as market screenings as part of the virtual film market, including NO ONE'S WITH THE CALVES by Sabrina Sarabi (Weydemann Bros.) and PRINCE by Lisa Bierwirth (Komplizen Film). As a Spotlight Programme, the TIFF Industry Conference presents a showreel of the German films in Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Venice and Toronto:

FESTIVAL OF GERMAN FILMS IN BUENOS AIRES


A varied programme of German filmmaking will be presented to the Argentine audience in compliance with the current hygiene regulations: internationally renowned figures such as Christian Petzold, Paula Beer or Moritz Bleibtreu are featured in the line-up alongside the up-and-coming filmmakers in the 2021 edition of the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER programme.
 
The Goethe-Institut Buenos Aires has curated a special focus with three films. The works of the selected directors focus on women who liberate themselves from their imposed roles as they seek self-determination and take control of their lives despite all the external circumstances.

FESTIVAL OF GERMAN FILMS IN PARIS


This year's festival will open with Lisa Bierwirth's PRINCE which stars hip-hop artist Passi and Ursula Strauss. The line-up also includes Daniel Brühl's directorial debut NEXT DOOR and the critics' favourite WHAT DO WE SEE WHEN WE LOOK AT THE SKY? by Alexandre Koberidze – with both films being shown on French cinema screens for the first time as avant-premieres by their distributors Eurozoom and Damned Films. Fans of documentary films also need not fear of being left out since there will be screenings of Maria Speth's award-winning MR BACHMANN AND HIS CLASS and THE CASE YOU by Alison Kuhn. Festival-goers will be treated to another preview with the presentation of the first two episodes of the German-French series ALGIERS CONFIDENTIAL, which features Ken Duken in one of the lead roles.

The Goethe-Institut is not only showing a retrospective of the top German director Dominik Graf, but has also invited the filmmaker to come to Paris. Graf will present a selection of his films to French cinema-goers on 2 October.

SHORT TAKE: THE GERMAN FILMS PODCAST: NEUE EPISODE


The Hamburger with Afghan roots studied in Brighton and at the NYU Tisch School where she met the professor and director Carol Dysinger. Dysinger brought Zamarin on board as a DoP and translator for her short documentary LEARNING TO SKATEBOARD IN A WARZONE (IF YOU ARE A GIRL). In 2020, the team won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject - a great start for Zamarin and just the beginning of even more successes for the filmmaker. Her short film directorial debut BAMBIRAK followed in the same year and was awarded "Best International Short Film" at the Sundance International Film Festival in 2021. Zamarin is currently developing the storyline from BAMBIRAK into a feature film and working on other short films as well as the documentary I AM SARAH where she is the cinematographer.

In the interview, she revealed more about her work, favourite films and her quest for the perfect Nutella recipe.

KINO! FILM SALON VENTURES ONTO THE STYX
Wolfgang Fischer's drama STYX will be the subject of the next meeting at the English-language KINO! FILM SALON online film club. The 2018 film features a tour de force performance by Susanne Wolff in the lead and deals with humanity and morality in the face of a seemingly hopeless situation: during a sailing trip from Gibraltar, German paramedic Rike finds herself after a storm near to a stricken boat of refugees. MUNICH FILM UP! INTERNATIONAL MENTORING PROGRAMME
The initiative MUNICH FILM UP! sees the HFF Munich supporting six debut projects on the basis of a treatment in cooperation with the Filmschoolfest Munich and the Filmfest München and as part of an exclusive partnership with the Pop Up Film Residency. Filmmakers will receive comprehensive mentoring between November 2021 and June 2022. This includes an individual residency lasting three weeks, support with the first draft of the film's script, and intensive networking activities within the industry and at festivals. The programme is free of charge for the six finalists and also includes travel and accommodation.

International film school students and young alumni (up to three years after graduation) can apply up until 15 September.

GERMAN FILM WINS IN GIFFONI
A German film celebrated a splendid success at the Giffoni International Film Festival at the end of July: NIGHT FOREST by André Hörmann and produced by Kurhaus Production won the Gryphon Award for Best Film in the Elements 10+ competition. The story about two best friends who go on a great adventure together in the Swabian Alb impressed both the jury and audience at the world-famous children's film festival.
