Double premiere for NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023 in Dresden and Cannes

18.04.2023

This year will be the third time that the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER program of short films is celebrating its premiere at the Filmfest Dresden before being presented to the international audience a month later at the Festival de Cannes. This year's jury members - commissioning editor Katrin Küchler (MDR short film magazine unicato), director Sophie Linnenbaum (THE ORDINARIES) and cinema-owner Dr. Christian Bräuer (CEO Yorck Kinogruppe) -  selected nine short films from 67 submissions for the 13th edition of the joint initiative between German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA) to promote young talents.

The 35th Filmfest Dresden (18-23 April, 2023) is the ideal host for the premiere of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023 with its top-notch line-up of films and supporting program as well as numerous international professionals. It will be held in the Schauburg cinema on Saturday, 22 April, at 4 pm. The new program of shorts will then be shown on Tuesday, 23 May, to the international industry in its traditional market presentation at the Marché du Film during the Festival de Cannes (6.45 pm at Olympia 2). The filmmakers will be present at both screenings.

"Focused, powerful, short: the films in the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER selection demonstrate yet again how short films can take just a few minutes in order to tell stories transcending place and generation," Sarah Duve-Schmid, FFA Deputy CEO and Head of Funding, says. "We are delighted that we can now have the premiere of this program at Filmfest Dresden for a third time and present the SHORT TIGER AWARD to promising directorial talent. We wish all of the selected films and their makers lots of success and an interested audience around the globe."

"The young talents show evidence in NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER of their creativity, willingness to experiment and a sense for relevant topics. We are therefore delighted that we are again premiering these outstanding short films on two occasions in Dresden and Cannes," Simone Baumann, Managing Director of German Films, adds.

The films of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023:

The animated short film PRIMITIVE TIMES  by Hao Yu will only be screened as part of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023 after its international festival premiere and is not part of the Filmfest Dresden program.

Detailed information about all of the films and filmmakers can be found here.

The selected films can be screened by registered users on the industry platforms Festivalscope Pro and T-Port from the beginning of May. In addition, industry professionals can request a personal screening link from German Films (nextgeneration@german-films.de). German cinemas can book the Short Tiger winners from the Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg.

Following the premieres in Dresden and Cannes, the program can be seen at international festivals such as the one in Warsaw as well as at the Festivals of German Films organised by German Films abroad, including Buenos Aires, Paris, Rome, and Madrid.

The joint initiative of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER by German Films and FFA has existed since 2011. The criteria for the FFA SHORT TIGER AWARD are: maximum length of five minutes, entertaining and innovative, and particularly suitable for screening in cinemas. A jury of experts decides on the winning films and awards prize money of Euro 5,000 to each film. NEXT GENERATION was initiated by German Films in 1997 to introduce young talents from German film schools to international audiences. Submissions for the program may not be any longer than 15 minutes. Entries may be submitted by German film schools, technical and art colleges with film training courses, but AG Kurzfilm can also accept applications from the independent film scene.

German Films and the FFA would like to thank AG Kurzfilm – German Short Film Association and Filmfest Dresden for their support of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2023.
