KINO! RETURNS TO NEW YORK

The spring is bringing fresh new German films to the Big Apple. KINO! 2015 Festival of German Films will be showing ten new feature-length films as well as the GERMAN SHORT FILM NIGHT program from 9 – 16 April 2015 in the Cinema Village in New York. Five guests will present their works in person at the festival. Panel discussions will complement the program. KINO! is organized by German Films.

In its second year as an independent festival, KINO! will present a wide cross-section of German filmmaking to the New York audiences – from moving drama through adventurous road trip to suspense-laden genre thriller and original children's film. The films were selected by three representatives of the New York film scene: distributor Ian Stimler, journalist Karl Rozemeyer and festival consultant Nicole Guillemet.

KINO! will open in the Tribeca Cinemas on 9 April 2015 with TOUR DE FORCE (Majestic Filmproduktion). The tragicomedy with a top-notch acting ensemble led by Florian David Fitz was previously shown at such international festivals as Locarno and Toronto. Director Christian Zübert will introduce his film together with a moderated film discussion.

Another prestigious festival guest will be Hannah Herzsprung, who appears in Baran bo Odar's WHO AM I – NO SYSTEM IS SAFE (Wiedemann & Berg Film). Director Mark Monheim will come to New York for a film discussion on ABOUT A GIRL (Imbissfilm), as will Christian Rainer whose short PITTER PATTER GOES MY HEART is showing in the GERMAN SHORT FILM NIGHT program. Producer Philipp Budweg will accompany the screening of the family film THE PASTA DETECTIVES by Neele Leana Vollmar (Lieblingsfilm).

The accompanying program in collaboration with the Deutsches Haus at New York University and the Goethe-Institut in New York includes a panel discussion on the documentary BELTRACCHI - THE ART OF FORGERY (Fruitmarket Arts & Media) with director Arne Birkenstock and a discussion about the political thriller THE LIES OF THE VICTORS (Heimatfilm) with the director Christoph Hochhäusler and the filmmaker Amie Siegel, moderated by Professor Ulrich Baer of New York University.

An audience award is being presented at the festival for the first time this year. The audience can vote online at the festival website for their favorite film.

HOT DOCS SHOW GERMAN WORLD PREMIERES

12 German films and co-productions have been programmed at the Hot Docs in Toronto, the most important documentary festival in North America. Four films can be seen as world premieres from 23 April to 3 May 2015, with another five celebrating their North American premiere at the festival.

The world premiere of POSSESSED BY DJINN by the Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker Dalia Al-Kury (DE/JO, Lichtblick Film), who investigates a controversial and little known aspect of Islamic culture: the belief in djinn, is programmed in the World Showcase. ORIGINAL COPY by Florian Heinzen-Ziob and Georg Heinzen (polyphem Filmproduktion) will have its world premiere in Screen to Screen. The first feature-length documentary by Florian Heinzen-Ziob is about Mumbai's last movie poster artist and his struggles to pass on his legacy to the next generation.

A world or international premiere at the IDFA in Amsterdam, Europe's largest documentary festival, and a North American premiere at the Hot Docs in Toronto - that's something no less than three German films and co-productions have managed this year. Two of them are graduation films from the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg: ABOVE AND BELOW (CH/DE, Flying Moon Filmproduktion) by director Nicolas Steiner about five eccentric individuals in an apocalyptic world, will screen in the International Spectrum competition in Toronto. Matthias Bittner's WAR OF LIES (zischlermann filmproduktion, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Film- & Fernsehlabor Ludwigsburg) can be seen as one of the Special Presentations. The film is the story of an Iraqi chemical engineer whose information about mobile weapons of mass destruction passed to the BND, MI6 and CIA and was used by the US government to legitimize the invasion of Iraq.

THE QUEEN OF SILENCE by Agnieszka Zwiefka (DE/PL, ma.ja.de. Filmproduktion) about the ten-year-old Denisa, who lives illegally in a Polish Roma camp, will have its North American premiere in Hot Docs' World Showcase after being programmed in the IDFA competition.

ON THE RIM OF THE SKY (DE/CN) was first seen in the Semaine de la Critique in Locarno. The film by the director Hongjie Xu, who has now been living in Germany for several years, will screen in Toronto's World Showcase and take its audience on a journey to the Chinese village of Gulu high up in the mountains of Sichuan.

Three German shorts are also featured in the Hot Docs program: DICTATOR’S HOTEL by Florian Hoffmann (DE/CF, DFFB) and POEM OF THE DAY by Youdid Kahveci will have their world premieres in Shorts. IMRAAN, C/O CARROM CLUB by Udita Bhargava (DE/IN, Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF) will have its North American premiere in the Made in India sidebar.

SPOTLIGHT: VOD

The digital exploitation of feature films is increasingly gaining in importance and the video on demand (VOD) market is experiencing strong growth in Germany as well as on an international level. Turnover from VOD doubled in Europe from 2008 to 2011. In the UK, for example, it has now become so much a part of daily life to be signed up to a VOD provider that these costs were included in March 2014 as one of the expenditures which are regularly monitored for the consumer price index (see German Films VOD study).

German Films also wants to stay abreast of this development and use its potential for the circulation of German films abroad. Thus, in 2014, a cooperation was entered into with the UniversCiné and ivi.ru platforms to present German productions on VOD for the first time concurrently with the Festivals of German Films in Paris and Moscow. This is also planned in 2015 for other Festivals of German Films such as the one in Madrid. A collaboration with platfoms in key territories like the USA or China is currently in the works.

The Festival of German Films in Paris (8 - 14 October 2014) saw EuroVOD and UniversCiné collaborating with German Films to launch an accompanying online program of German films that had been shown at the festival in previous years. Thanks to the joint venture, there were 30 times more downloads of German films per month than before the cooperation. The documentary MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE by Marc Bauder (DE/AT, Bauderfilm), which opened in French cinemas on 26 November 2014, could be seen as a VOD avant-premiere on 12 November 2014 as part of the SPIDE day & date release campaign.

The Festival of German Films in Moscow in December 2014 immediately reached good viewing figures with its VOD premiere parallel to the film screenings in the cinemas. In collaboration with German Films, the Russian VOD service ivi.ru introduced a German section with 10 productions in its line-up, which were seen online around 23,000 times in the first weeks. A special feature saw the festival opening film SUCK ME SHAKESPEER being made available on VOD throughout Russia at the same time as its theatrical release on 4 December 2014.
