VEIT HELMER IN COMPETITION AT TOKYO

VEIT HELMER IN COMPETITION AT TOKYO

THE BRA (Veit Helmer-Filmproduktion), the latest feature film by director Veit Helmer, will be celebrating its international world premiere in the Competition of the Tokyo International Film Festival (25 October – 3 November, 2018).

Thanks to THE BRA, German cinema has now been able to score a superb hat trick in Tokyo, one of the most important film festivals in Asia – with three films in competition in three consecutive years. 2016 saw the screening of THE BLOOM OF YESTERDAY (DIE BLUMEN VON GESTERN) by Chris Kraus, this was followed in 2017 by FORGET ABOUT NICK by Margarethe von Trotta and now by THE BRA.

Veit Helmer delivers renewed proof that he is a master of imaginative visual language with THE BRA, his charming comedy about the search for love. The lonely train driver Nurlan is sent off by the director in search of the owner of a fantastically beautiful blue lace bra which got snagged by his train on his very last day at work. Nurlan's curiosity is aroused: who might this little piece of material actually belong to? Helmer has directed his film as a modern fairytale that manages without any dialogue – and that is precisely why the audience comes under its spell.

The World Focus sidebar features the award-winning filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta with SEARCHING FOR INGMAR BERGMAN. The director is therefore returning to Tokyo one more time after having been in Competition in 2012 with HANNAH ARENDT and in 2017 with FORGET ABOUT NICK.
