The Tribeca Film Festival (24 April - 5 May 2019) is celebrating its 18th edition. Two German films are featured in this year’s international competition. Both feature films tackle important social- und cultural themes and take a serious but also emotional look at the current status of the world.

A REGULAR WOMAN (VINCENT TV) by Sherry Hormann will have its world premiere in the festival competition. In her sensitive drama the German director tells the story of Hatun Aynur Sürücü. She lets her protagonist speak for herself and composes an authentic portrait of a hungry-for-life, freedom-loving and courageous young woman, who fights for the right to live a self-determined life. But as a German woman with Turkish-Kurdish roots she is in constant conflict between the values of her family and her own view on life – with tragic consequences. The film will be released in German cinemas on May 9th.

Sebastian Schipper is part of Tribeca’s competition with his first international production ROADS (DE/FR, Missing Link Films, Studiocanal Film, Komplizen Film, Radical Media). In his latest film the director (VICTORIA) shows a world in radical upheaval. The story centers around 18-year-old Gyllen. The young Brit has stolen his stepfather’s caravan to escape the family holiday in Morocco. He meets William, who is on his way from the Congo to Europe to find his missing brother. The two lost boys band together. But on their way through a Europe in the midst of the refugee crisis their friendship and trust in each other are put to the test. The German theatrical release of ROADS will be on May 30th.

Founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff the Tribeca Film Festival was their mission to revitalize the lower Manhattan neighborhood of the same name after the events of 9/11.
