Third Festival of German Cinema in Mexico: Great success for ROSENSTRASSE

The Export-Union and the Goethe Institut in Mexico are very pleased with the results of the third Festival of German Cinema in Mexico City (27th January to 4th February 2004): 25% more spectators than at the previous event attended the programme with eight new German films.

The opening film ROSENSTRASSE, in particular, met with an outstanding response from the press and public. Director Margarethe von Trotta and actress Katja Riemann opened the festival with a sold-out performance.

A selection of eight films made for a thematically versatile and exciting programme. The films showing were:

· FÜHRER EX by Winfried Bonengel

· DISTANT LIGHTS (LICHTER) by Hans-Christian Schmid

· SHATTERED GLASS (SCHERBENTANZ) by Chris Kraus

· SOLINO by Fatih Akin

· PIGS WILL FLY by Eoin Moore

· THE MIRACLE OF BERN (DAS WUNDER VON BERN) by Sönke Wortmann

· THE SLURB (DAS SAMS) by Ben Verbong

The festival films met with great acclaim as part of an event for buyers and distrubutors. „After many years saw only a handful of German films being sold to Mexico, the interest in German cinema is growing at the moment", said Gustav Wilhelmi, the Export-Union's foreign representative for Latin America. "Last year, NOWHERE IN AFRICA and MOSTLY MARTHA were released successfully in Mexican cinemas. 2004 already sees Mexican distributors with several German films in their lineups.“
