Seven German fllms at the Mar del Plata Film Festival

Three German competition entries and another four German films in sidebars can be seen at the 17th Festival International de Cine de Mar del Plata (07. - 16.03.2002), the only so-called "A - Festival" in South America.

Three German-international co-productions are taking part in the festival's official competition: ANNA'S SUMMER by Jeanine Meerapfel

(Germany, Spain, Greece) and TAKING SIDES by István Szabó (Germany, UK, France), which were both nominated, among other things, for the "European Film Awards" and were shown most recently at the Berlinale, as well as THE CAT´S MEOW by Peter Bogdanovich (Germany, UK).

Further German films can be seen in the sidebars: the section "Punto de Vista" will show the films A JOURNEY INTO THE MIND OF P. and THE JOURNEY TO KAFIRISTAN (REISE NACH KAFIRISTAN) by Fosco and Donatello Dubini. The German-international co-production INVINCIBLE by Werner Herzog (Germany, UK, USA) will also be shown in this section. CHICO by Ibolya Fekete (Germany, Chile, Croatia, Hungary) will be screened in the "Latinoamérica XXI" sidebar.

The festival was established in the coastal resort of Mar del Plata as early as 1954, but could not take place for 26 years due to political and economic reasons.

Finally, it was revived in 1996 and soon established itself as one of the most important film events on the South American continent. In spite of the difficult situation in Argentina again, the so-called "A - Festival" will be staged again this year, albeit under complicated circumstances due to rigorous cost-cutting measures, There are currently twelve so-called "A - Festivals" which are film events recognised by FIAPF as "competitive feature film festivals".
