KARLOVY VARY: TWO GERMAN DOCS IN COMPETITION

The 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (29 June – 7 July, 2018) has announced its competition entries. Two German films have been programmed in the Documentary Competition: DREAM AWAY by Marouan Omara and Johanna Domke (DE/EG/QA, Monokel, Fruitmarket) and THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR LIFE by Zita Erffa (DE/MX, Petruvski Films, University of Television and Film Munich). In total, six German films and co-productions can be seen in the competition sections of the popular summer festival.

DREAM AWAY, which will have its world premiere in Karlovy Vary, sees Johanna Domke and the Egyptian filmmaker Marouan Omara following a group of young Egyptians in Sharm El Sheikh. It's now been a long time since rich tourists had spent their holidays in the luxury hotels there. The Arab Spring and the post-revolutionary unrest soon robbed the town of its charm as a summer resort. Complemented by elements of surreal fiction, the documentary takes the audience into a shimmering ghost town to visit its last inhabitants. In 2017, DREAM AWAY was selected for the Final Cut section of the Venice Film Festival where six works in progress are presented to producers, distributors, sales agents and festival representatives.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR LIFE is a film about two people who were very dear to one another and try to get back in touch again after a long period without any contact, and it is the first feature-length film by Zita Erffa. Eight years ago, the director's brother László had unexpectedly joined the Legionarios order in order to become a priest.  As children, they had both been sent to the summer camps of the Legionarios. That week had always been the high point in the year. But the order had always seemed rather odd and almost like a sect to the two siblings. Zita Erffa asks why her brother has made her of all people to be a part of his new family. She travels to his monastery in Connecticut.
