German films in Pusan (14. - 23.10.1999)

Held this year for the fourth time in the South Korean coastal town of Pusan, the international film festival has selected a total of seven German films or international co-productions with German participation. As for last year, they will be presented by the German Export-Union in cooperation with "European Film Promotion", an amalgamation of the European national film promotion agencies.

The festival has very quickly acquired a significance on an international level and is now regarded as the gate to the South East Asian market: while its official competition section is reserved for productions from Asia, the sidebar "World Cinema" devotes particular attention to European cinema. Screening from Germany will be: DEALER by Thomas Arslan; NIGHT SHAPES (NACHTGESTALTEN) by Andreas Dresen; JEW-BOY LEVI (VIEHJUD LEVI by Didi Danquart; PATHS IN THE NIGHT (WEGE IN DIE NACHT ) by Andreas Kleinert; in addition, the Austro-German-Swiss co-production NORTHERN SKIRTS (NORDRAND) by Barbara Albert; the Turkish-German-Dutch co-production JOURNEY TO THE SUN (REISE ZUR SONNE) by Yesim Ustaoglu, and Piotr Karwas with the German-Polish-produced short MASKS.

For the second year running, there will be the parallel event of the co-production market "Pusan Promotion Plan" which is conceived on a similar basis to Rotterdam's "Cinemart" and brings producers with Asian stories together with potential producers from all over the world.

"European Film Promotion" and its member national promotion agencies will be active in Pusan helping to give the invited European films a greater visibility and improving the contacts between the Asian and European film industry.
