German Films' "Distribution Support" an effective means for giving a boost to German cinema

The "Distribution Support" committee supported twelve theatrical releases of German films abroad with a total of €123,000 at the fourth session this year on August 10, 2006.

No less than five of the funding decisions were for films which are being handled internationally by Bavaria Film International. Thorsten Schauman, Head of Bavaria Film International, Sales & Acquisitions, says:

"An important instrument was created for the international marketing of German productions with the Distribution Support made available by German Films to foreign distributors. This consequently results in a well-directed support of our distributors. With the help of the allocated monies they can raise the market presence of German cinema in the respective countries for the film's release. This support of success is essential when seen against the background of the ever harsher competition in almost all territories. Within a very short space of time, the system of the Distribution Support has established itself as an indispensable and effective element toward boosting German cinema."

The committee granted support to the following films:

* BUZZ in the USA

* CROSSING THE BRIDGE in Italy

* ELEMENTARY PARTICLES (ELEMENTARTEILCHEN) in Belgium

* EMMA'S BLISS (EMMAS GLUECK) in Switzerland

* INTO GREAT SILENCE (DIE GROSSE STILLE) in Belgium

* THE CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG (DIE HOEHLE DES GELBEN HUNDES) in Australia

* THE ROBBER HOTZENPLOTZ (DER RAEUBER HOTZENPLOTZ) in Russia

* RHYTHM IS IT! in Denmark

* LONGING (SEHNSUCHT) in Switzerland

* SEVEN DWARVES (SIEBEN ZWERGE) in Poland

* SOPHIE SCHOLL – THE FINAL DAYS (SOPHIE SCHOLL – DIE LETZTEN TAGE) in Chile and Columbia

The "Distribution Support" program of German Films has existed since 2005. The funding is intended for the financing of additional measures to supplement the release campaign which had already been planned by the foreign distributors. The support to a maximum of €50,000 is granted in the the form of a conditionally repayable loan. Funding of up €10,000 can also be allocated as a grant.
