At this year's second session on 28 March 2006, the "Distribution Support" awards committee funded nine foreign theatrical campaigns of German films with a total of Euros 86.000. THE WHITE MASAI (DIE WEISSE MASSAI) alone was supported in four countries.
Support was agreed at the session in the case of THE WHITE MASAI for distributors in Australia, Denmark, Israel and Hungary. The film had already been supported in the previous session for the release in the Netherlands.
Andreas Rothbauer of Beta Cinema, the film's world sales company:
"THE WHITE MASAI is the first time where we are taking part in this still young program of German Films and are pleased about the positive and targetted support of leading foreign distributors. With the international sales and distribution business being just like getting through the eye of needle, this program is an important step to filling even more international distributors with enthusiasm for the German cinema and keeping up with the existing distribution support programs like in France. After the very positive experiences, we will definitely recommend the German Films 'Distribution Support' in the future to our clients as a complement to their marketing strategy."
Apart from the funding for THE WHITE MASAI, the committee decided to support the following films:
* BAREFOOT / BARFUSS in Czech Republic
* LOW PROFILE (FALSCHER BEKENNER) in France
* THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL (DIE GESCHICHTE VOM WEINENDEN KAMEL) in Mexico
* INTO GREAT SILENCE (DIE GROSSE STILLE) in Italy
* SUMMER IN BERLIN (SOMMER VORM BALKON) in Taiwan
The "Distribution Support" programme of German Films has existed since 2005. The funding is intended for the financing of additional measures to supplement the release campaign which had already been planned by the foreign distributors. The support to a maximum of Euros 50.000 is granted in the the form of a conditionally repayable loan. Funding of up Euros 10.000 can also be allocated as a grant. In 2006, German Films has an overall budget of Euros 500.000 available for the support program.
