Three German productions and two German-international coproductions will be shown in the international competition of the 14th Short Film Festival in France's Clermont-Ferrand (1.-9.2.2002).
FORKLIFT DRIVER KLAUS - THE FIRST DAY AT WORK (STAPLERFAHRER KLAUS - DER ERSTE ARBEITSTAG) by Joerg Wagner and Stefan Prehn, which - as a homage to the safety at work films - recounts the grotesque experiences of a newly qualified forklift driver, could already be seen in Cannes at the "Semaine de la Critique" (9.-20.5.2001).
Boris Hars-Tschachotin's short LURCH is set in the reptile department of the Natural History Museum in Berlin. An unemployed man in his mid-fifties is supposed to save the threatened collection of the pickled reptiles by topping up the evaporated alcohol. A chance mishap changes his initial disgust to pleasure as he discovers the high-proof liquid's diverse tastes.
The animation film THE WHEEL (DAS RAD) by three students of the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg, Chris Stenner, Heidi Wittlinger and Arvid Uibel (1978-2000), is also taking part in the competition. Chris Stenner and Arvid Uibel had already participated in the Export-Union's "Next Generation" short film project for German film students in 2000 with their film MANN IM MOND.
In addition, two German-international coproductions are being shown in the international competition: MIT MIR by Kerstin Cmelka (Austria/Germany) and TODAS LAS NOCHES TERMINAN EN EL MALECON by Cecilia Araùjo (Cuba/Brazil/Germany).
Clermont-Ferrand is regarded along with the festivals in Tampere (Finland) and Annecy (France) as one of the most important European events in the field of short films. The festival, which is attracting increasingly more representatives of international advertsing agencies, also has a short film market to which all films automatcally participate who have been invited to the international competition. This year, the market, which enjoys a very good reputatiion, will have participation from Germany by the KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg e.V. as well as the interfilm berlin short film festival.
