The German entry IN THE FADE by Fatih Akin (DE/FR, bombero international, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, corazón international) has made it to the shortlist of the last nine films for the 90th Oscar® in the Best Foreign Language Film category. This was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

In addition, another six German co-productions - A FANTASTIC WOMAN by Sebastián Lelio (CL/US/DE/ES, Komplizen Film) for Chile, FÉLICITÉ by Alain Gomis (FR/SN/BE/DE/LB, Kathu Studio) for Senegal, FOXTROT by Samuel Maoz (DE/IL/FR/CH, Pola Pandora) for Israel, LOVELESS by Andrey Zvyagintsev (RU/BE/DE/FR, Senator Film Produktion) for Russia, THE SQUARE by Ruben Östlund (SE/FR/DE/DK, Essential Film) for Sweden and THE WOUND by John Trengove (ZA/DE, Riva Film) for South Africa – are in the line-up. A total of 92 countries had submitted their films for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The shortlists for the short film categories had already been announced. The German Student Oscar winner WATU WOTE - ALL OF US by Katja Benrath (Hamburg Media School) is on the list for Best Live Action, and REVOLTING RHYMES, a British production by the German directors Jakob Schuh and Jan Lachauer, is in the Animated Short Films category.

The two German (co-)productions HUMAN FLOW by Ai Weiwei (Human Flow UG) and LAST MEN IN ALEPPO by Fera Fayyad (DK/DE, Kloos & Co. Medien) are still in the running in the documentary section.

The five nominees then participating in the final line-up for the Oscar® will be selected from the films on the shortlist. The Academy will reveal the Oscar® nominations on 23 January 2018. The awards ceremony is being held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on 4 March 2018.

IN THE FADE was selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category in August 2017 by an independent expert jury appointed by German Films. The film has also been nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award and the Golden Globe. Last year's German entry TONI ERDMANN by Maren Ade was on the shortlist and also received an Oscar® nomination.

About the film:

Katja’s life suddenly implodes her husband and son die in a bomb attack. The police arrest two suspects: a young neo-Nazi couple. Katja wants justice – for her, there is no alternative.

IN THE FADE had its world premiere in the Competition of the 70th Festival de Cannes where the lead actress Diane Kruger was named Best Actress. Invitations then followed to other important festivals such as Sydney, Moscow and Karlovy Vary, Toronto, Busan, Chicago or the AFI Fest L.A. Sales agent The Match Factory has sold IN THE FADE to over 30 territories worldwide, including the USA. Magnolia Pictures is releasing the film there in the cinemas on 27 December 2017.

IN THE FADE is a production by bombero international and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, in co-production with corazón international and France's Macassar Productions and Pathé. The production was backed by Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH), German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, and the German Federal Film Board (FFA) .
