OPENING SOLD OUT IN MOSCOW

2017-11-24

Robert Schwentke, a German director with a successful Hollywood career, has many fans in the Russian capital. His new film THE CAPTAIN (DE/FR/PL, Filmgalerie 451) will be opening the Festival of German Films in Moscow (29 November – 5 December 2017) - with Schwentke and the composer Martin Todsharow attending -, and the screening is already sold out. Organized by German Films, the event will be presenting a total of 12 German feature films, a series and three shorts as well as the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2017 program of shorts at the Formular Kino Horizont Cinema.

What is particularly striking about this year's guests is that they have extensive experience of Russia: the director Matti Geschonneck, who will be presenting the GDR story of three generations IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT (MOOVIE the art of entertainment GmbH), studied Directing at the Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow for four years. The documentary filmmaker Jakob Preuss of WHEN PAUL CAME OVER THE SEA (Weydemann Bros.) worked in 2007/2008 as the desk officer for CIS at "Reporters Without Borders", and Francy Fabritz, who will present her short ETAGE X as part of the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2017 showcase, was partly raised in Russia.

Potential distributors in addition to the regular cinema-going audience will get to see the latest German films in the program. In fact, two of the titles have already found a Russian distributor and will use the festival as an avant-premiere ahead of their theatrical release: the German Oscar® hopeful IN THE FADE by Fatih Akin (DE/FR, bombero international, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, corazón international will be released by Russian World Vision in the cinemas there on 22 February 2018. FOUR AGAINST THE BANK by Wolfgang Petersen (Hellinger/Doll Filmproduktion, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany) will already be launched on 7 December 2017 by Rocket Releasing, and the screening at the Festival of German Films will also give delegates at the simultaneous leading Russian cinema trade fair  „Kinorynok“ a chance to see the film.In addition, German Films is intensifying its collaboration with Video on Demand services as a way of promoting alternative and sustainable forms of exploitation for German films in Russia. This will be the fourth time that the VoD service ivi.ru is having a German section in its program parallel to the festival. The international best-selling series BABYLON BERLIN by Tom Tykwer, Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries (X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, Sky, Beta Film) was bought by Viasat for the Russian VoD audience. The Festival of German Films will now collaborate with Viasat on showing the first two episodes. All of the films in the program of the 2017 Festival of German Films in Moscow:Feature Films:THE CAPTAIN (DER HAUPTMANN) by Robert Schwentke (DE/FR/PL, Filmgalerie 451)AXOLOTL OVERKILL by Helene Hegemann (Vandertastic, Constantin Film Produktion)FOUR AGAINST THE BANK (VIER GEGEN DIE BANK) by Wolfgang Petersen (Hellinger/Doll Filmproduktion, Warner Bros.
