OSCAR® RACE: SEARCH BEGINS FOR GERMAN CANDIDATE 2018

The film that is going to represent Germany in the 90th Oscars® competition for the Best Foreign Language Film category will be announced on 24 August 2017. An independent jury will decide on which film this will be after convening in Munich the days before. 

The following eleven films were submitted by the German producers to German Films for consideration in selection: 

Please note: This is not a shortlist compiled as the result of a pre-selection, but the submissions made by the rights holders without any pre-selection.

  • THE BLOOM OF YESTERDAY by Chris Kraus (DE/AT, Dor Film-West, Four Minutes Filmproduktion)
  • ORIGINAL BLISS by Sven Taddicken (Frisbeefilms, Cine Plus Filmproduktion, Senator Film)
  • IN TIMES OF FADING LIGHT by Matti Geschonneck (MOOVIE)
  • JONATHAN by Piotr J. Lewandowski (Kordes & Kordes Film)
  • GODLESS YOUTH by Alain Gsponer (die film, Constantin Film Produktion)
  • MY BLIND DATE WITH LIFE by Marc Rothemund (Ziegler Film, Studiocanal Film)
  • PAULA by Christian Schwochow (DE/FR, Pandora Film Produktion, Grown Up Films)
  • WESTERN by Valeska Grisebach (DE/BG/AT, Komplizen Film)
  • WELCOME TO GERMANY by Simon Verhoeven (Wiedemann & Berg Film, Sentana Filmproduktion, Seven Pictures)

The German entry for the Oscar® in the Best Foreign Language Film category is decided by a selection committee appointed each year. This committee consists of representatives from eight different trade associations and institutions active in the field of cinema. The following representatives were sent by the associations this year:

  • German Producers Association: Fabian Massah
  • German Producers Alliance / Cinema Section: Katharina Rinderle
  • Association of German Film Exporters: Klaus Rasmussen
  • Association of German Film Distributors: Martin Bachmann
  • Association of German Exhibitors: Christoph Preßmar
  • German Film Critics Association: Dennis Vetter
  • German Directors Guild: Rainer Matsutani
  • German Film Academy: Sven Burgemeister, Rosalie Thomass

As the responsible umbrella organisation, German Films is charged with the preparation and organization of the selection procedure for the German candidate who will be entered into the race for the Oscar® in the Best Foreign Language Film category. German Films is not represented in the selection committee.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will announce the five nominated films in the Best Foreign Language Film category on 23 January 2018. The awards ceremony will be held in the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on 4 March 2018.
