CANNES: GERMAN PRESENCE IN SEMAINE DE LA CRITIQUE

2017-04-21

The Festival de Cannes' independent sidebars Quinzaine des Réalisateurs and Semaine de la Critique have announced the titles for this year's line-ups. The Semaine de la Critique will be presenting the animated feature film TEHRAN TABOO by Ali Soozandeh (DE/AT, Little Dream Entertainment) and the short ELA – SKETCHES ON A DEPARTURE by Oliver Adam Kusio (Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF). The German director Werner Herzog will receive the Carrosse d’Or award during the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs from the the sidebar's organizers, the French Directors' Association SRF.

The Quinzaine has also programmed the German co-productions I AM NOT A WITCH by Rungano Nyoni (FR/GB/ZM/DE, unafilm), INTRUDER by Leonardo Di Costanzo (IT/CH/FR/DE, ZDF Das kleine Fernsehspieland, NOTHINGWOOD by Sonia Kronlund (FR/DE, Made in Germany Filmproduktion), while the Semaine de la Critique will be showing LOS PERROS by Marcela Said (FR/CL/AR/DE/PT, augenschein Filmproduktion).

Tehran is a city full of restrictions and religious laws where any type of crime leads to draconic punishment. Yet, the lust for life in young women and men who seek to live freely has made it an everyday sport to avoid these strict prohibitions. Three women of different social backgrounds and a young musician will cross path. TEHRAN TABOO expresses with tenderness and humor the hypocrisy and the contradictions of the system and its consequences. Writer-director Ali Soozandeh was born in Iran. He studied Media Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne and was responsible for the animation on several feature films and documentaries.

The short ELA – SKETCHES ON A DEPARTURE by Oliver Adam Kusio tells the story of the title character Ela, who lives together with her elder sister and her nephew in precarious living conditions in a small provincial town in Poland. Her daily life is stuck in a routine, balancing work and family, but Ela has a dream: like many young Polish people, Ela wants to escape the tower block housing estate and move to the West for a better life. Although she has spent months saving up for a flight ticket to Ireland, she still can't bring herself to make the decision to leave.  Oliver Adam Kusio has been studying Directing at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF since 2014. He has worked, among other things, as an assistant director and co-director with Rosa von Praunheim on the documentaries EIN HARTES LEBEN and PRAUNHEIM MEMOIRES.

The 56th Semaine de la Critique is being held in Cannes from 18 to 26 May 2017. Organized by the French film critics' association, the independent section is dedicated to the discovery of new, innovative talents in international cinema. The program encompasses seven feature films and ten short and medium-length films.

The Quinzaine des Réalisateurs was launched in 1969 by the SRF – the French Directors' Association – and shows a selection of international auteur films parallel to the official festival. The 49th edition is being held this year from 18 to 28 May 2017.
