TONI ERDMANN by Maren Ade (DE/AT/MC, Komplizen Film, Missing Link Films) has been nominated for the 89th Academy Awards® in the category Best Foreign Language Film. The nominations were announced today by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The German-international co-production LAND OF MINE by Martin Zandvliet (DK/DE, Amusement Park Film) for Denmark, starring the German SHOOTING STAR Louis Hofmann, is also among the five films to receive a nomination in this category.

The German composer Volker Bertelmann (alias Hauschka) is yet another Oscar® hopeful. He is nominated, together with Dustin O’Halloran, in the category Original Music for the film LION by Garth Davis.

Also nominated in the category Best Documentary Short: WATAMI - MY HOMELAND (UK) by German director and cinematographer Marcel Mettelsiefen.

The Oscar® awards ceremony will take place on 26 February 2017 in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

TONI ERDMANN was selected by an independent jury, appointed by German Films, in August 2016 as the German submission in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

Maren Ade’s third feature film has been an international success story, one which began with its world premiere in Competition at the Festival de Cannes 2016. The film garnered euphoric acclaim from the industry, audiences and press and was named by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) as the Best Film of the Competition. Over the course of the year, TONI ERDMANN went on to screen at further significant festivals worldwide, including Toronto, San Sebastian, London, Moscow, Karlovy Vary, Venice Days, Telluride, New York and AFI Fest Los Angeles. And the film has been showered with awards including five European Film Awards (Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Actor), the LUX Prize of the European Parliament, the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film of the Year, the prize for Best Foreign Language Film from the New York Film Critics Circle the National Society of Film Critics (USA), the London Film Critics' Circle, as well as the FIPRESCI prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. TONI ERDMANN was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award® and the BAFTA Awards.

The sales agent The Match Factory has sold TONI ERDMANN in over 100 countries. In France the film was seen by over 340,000 cinemagoers, in Germany it reached around 800,000 admissions. The film was released in the US on 25 December 2016 and is currently screening in five cities there with a box office of USD 262,000. Further releases in additional cities are planned.
