COMPETITION & INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE: LARGE GERMAN PRESENCE IN SÃO PAULO

COMPETITION & INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE: LARGE GERMAN PRESENCE IN SÃO PAULO

German cinema again has a strong presence at the São Paulo International Film Festival with 41 German films and co-productions. The 43rd edition of one of South America's most important film festivals will take place from 17 to 30 October, 2019.

Savas Ceviz's HEAD BURST will have its world premiere in the New Directors Competition which is reserved for first and second films. CLEO – IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME by Erik Schmitt, the 3D documentary CUNNINGHAM by Alla Kovgan, DUST by Udita Bhargava, END OF SEASON by Elmar Imanov, PELICAN BLOOD by Katrin Gebbe, MUSIC & APOCALYPSE by Max Linz and the German Oscar candidate SYSTEM CRASHER will also be screened in this section.

The directors Udita Bhargava (DUST), Elmar Imanov (END OF SEASON), Savas Ceviz (HEAD BURST) as well as Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter (SPACE DOGS) will be coming to São Paulo to present their films to the festival audience.

Berlinale co-director Mariëtte Rissenbeek has curated the German Panorama sidebar for the festival. She concentrated in her selection on films that have profoundly impressed and accompanied her during her professional career for German Films and whose impressions still reverberate. Modern relationships are at the centre of such dramas as Emily Atef's THE STRANGER IN ME and Kathrin Gebbe's NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN  as well as OH BOY by Jan-Ole Gerster and Maren Ade's second feature film EVERYONE ELSE. Andreas Dresen's SUMMER IN BERLIN provides a light contrast. The series is rounded off by Margarethe von Trotta's ROSENSTRASSE, Christian Petzold's PHOENIX, AND ALONG COME TOURISTS by Robert Thalheim, HEAD-ON by Fatih Akin, and CHERRY BLOSSOMS – HANAMI by Doris Dörrie. Mariëtte Rissenbeek will present the selection during a public discussion on 26 October in the Espaço Itaú de Cinema - Augusta Anexo 4.

The German Panorama is being presented by the festival with the support of German Films, the Goethe Institut in São Paulo and Bavaria Media International.
