At the 70th edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, which will take place from September 16 to 24, 2022, three major German productions are in the line-up. The A-festival in the Basque city is one of the most important film festivals in Europe after Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

Ann Oren's PIAFFE (Schuldenberg Films) celebrated its world premiere at this year's Locarno Film Festival in the Concorso Internazionale competition section and will now be shown in San Sebastian in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section. It tells the story of the socially awkward Ewa who is left to her own devices after her sister Zara gets locked up in a mental institution. Ewa has to take over her domineering sister Zara's job as a Foley artist for a commercial featuring a horse. In her helpless state and a horse running wild, slowly an empowering horsetail grows out of her body. Ewa begins appropriating Zara's objects and ultimately her sister's love life.

THE OGGLIES – WELCOME IN SMELLIVILLE by Toby Genkel and Jens Moeller (WunderWerk) will be screened in the Haurrentzako Zinema section. The Ogglies are looking for a new home, but they never feel really welcome anywhere. They stink, and they are, for most humans, just a tad too oggly. When the family dragon crash-lands on the rubbish tip of Smelliville, the Ogglies feel immediately at home and decide to stay there. But things won't go as smoothly as expected and they will have to show the locals of Smelliville that together they can save the city.

The Nest section features two German short films. In AGAINST ALL ODDS by Laurenz Otto (ifs Köln) Younus does not give up - despite all doubts! Fascination clings to the alien-familiar figure of the father and mixes with the burgeoning longing for closeness. Blindly groping, exploring and observing. A risky game of rejection and affection, the tension which finally explodes and calls the fragile relationship into question. In Manaka Nagai's MONDNACHT (HFBK Hamburg) a young woman loses her mother. Everyday life goes on despite the great loss. She tries to distract herself from her grief and flies to the moon. When she returns home, a surprise awaits her.
