GERMAN RECEPTION

For many, the German reception on the first Saturday of the festival in Cannes is a fixed date in the diary. Many industry guests came up to the park of the Villa Rothschild despite the heavy rain, to celebrate the presence of German cinema and representatives of the film teams.

They included Valerie Pachner (actress, A HIDDEN LIFE), Martin Monk (director, FAVOURITES), the film team of THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF EURIDICE GUSMAO, Geraldine Bajard (writer, LITTLE JOE), Eva Trobisch (director, Women in Motion Award 2019 in Cannes), Heike Parplies (editor, TONI ERDMANN), Eva Blondiau (COLOR OF MAY, Producer on the Move 2019), Toni Garrn, Lena Meyer-Landrut, Katja Eichinger and Deborah Kara Unger, to name just a few.

German Films thanks its sponsors  Dr. Hauschka, Deutsche Telekom / Magenta TV, VGF and its media partner Variety as well as its wine partner Südliche Weinstraße e.V. for their support.

NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER

The screening of the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER short film program, which is  organized by German Films in cooperation with the FFA, has now reached almost cult status. This year again saw a long queue forming in front of the Olympia cinema despite the heavy rain. The cinema was filled to capacity, but all those short film fans who couldn't get into the screening can naturally obtain a DVD from German Films.

The program for the filmmakers during their stay in Cannes included a tour of the market as well as various workshops on the work of a sales agent, the market situation for arthouse cinemas in Germany as well as press campaigns at festivals.

Everything about the current NGST program can be found here...

MARCHÉ DU FILM AND GERMAN PAVILION

German Films presented 22 new German films - including seven market premieres - under the New German Films banner in market screenings at Cannes' Marché du Film.

The German Pavilion, which German Films organized together with Focus Germany in the International Village, proved once again to be a popular port of call for accredited professionals in its 18th year.

WEYDEMANN BROS. @Cannes: VARIETY’S 10 PRODUCERS TO WATCH

A lot can happen in 11 years! In 2008, Jonas and Jakob Weydemann launched their production company Weydemann Bros. in the living room of their Berlin flat. The two brothers have since been been joined by the producers Yvonne Wellie (since 2015) and Milena Klemke (since 2017) at the company based in Berlin and Cologne.

They try to find a balance between the political and entertaining aspects of cinematic storytelling with the films and series they produce for the German and international markets.

In an interview for Die Zeit in 2011, the brothers stated: "For us, film is always a critical observation of the time and the world in which we live. Our goal is to make lots of people laugh and cry with our films and to provoke thought in the process. We develop projects together with authors and directors and establish long-term creative partnerships". And they're evidently doing something right!

GERMAN FILMS: MARCEL MAÏGA IS THE NEW FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVE FOR EASTERN EUROPE & RUSSIA
Marcel Maïga (© Dennis Ruh)

Everything is new in May. And so we're pleased to be able to introduce our new foreign representative for Eastern Europe and Russia.

Marcel Maïga (born in Berlin in 1968) knows the markets in these regions inside-out - he has been working as a programmer at the Film Festival Cottbus since 1996. He was responsible there for such sidebars as "Russkiy Den", "Special Belarus", "Spotlight Georgia" and "Moldavian Discoveries". Maïga has also been a program coordinator at DOK Leipzig since 2011 and has been advising the Schlingel International Children's and Youth Film Festival since 2008.

Welcome to the German Films team!

We asked him to answer three questions to introduce himself to the German filmmakers in his new role.
