German Films will take its marketing campaign, FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS, which launched last year at the London Film Festival, forward in its second year with the support of six of Germany’s most exciting male actors: Volker Bruch, Alexander Fehling, Louis Hofmann, Jannis Niewöhner, Tom Schilling and Ronald Zehrfeld.
The FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS initiative launched in 2016 with six German actresses headlining the campaign - including the multi award-winning Sandra Hüller (TONI ERDMANN). The second phase of the initiative will launch in May during the Festival de Cannes and will continue to promote German cinema achievements to international audiences with a series of marketing and PR measures.
The six acclaimed German actors, who together demonstrate the diverse range of German cinema styles and stories, will be positioned as ambassadors for the promotion of German films outside of their home country.
Taking the spotlight will be: Volker Bruch - who has just wrapped production on the highly-anticipated German-language drama series, BABYLON BERLIN; Alexander Fehling - whose credits include the internationally acclaimed LABYRINTH OF LIES and TV’s HOMELAND and who is playing the lead in Jan Zabeil's new feature THREE PEAKS alongside Bérénice Bejo; Louis Hofmann (European Shooting Star 2017), who received great acclaim this year in the Oscar®-nominated Danish feature film LAND OF MINE and will soon star in DARK, the upcoming, first German language series from Netflix; Jannis Niewöhner, who broke through as the star of the film adaptations of the RUBY RED Trilogy - a hugely popular teen fiction series - and who along with Hofmann is a past European Shooting Star recipient; Tom Schilling – who plays the lead in Oscar®-winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s new feature film WERK OHNE AUTOR and whose expansive acting career includes THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX, A COFFEE IN BERLIN and television drama, GENERATION WAR, alongside fellow FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS colleague, Volker Bruch; Ronald Zehrfeld, who has been appearing in internationally award-winning features since 2005, including arthouse favorites BARBARA and PHOENIX, as well as the TV drama SS-GB.
German Films’ Managing Director Mariette Rissenbeek said of the announcement, "A new generation of German filmmakers is spreading its wings, either on the big screen or in the digital world. FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS gives us the unique opportunity to visualize this trend and to put a spotlight on the faces either behind or in front of the camera. Through FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS the audience will discover these talents and find access to the latest German films.”
Promoting the campaign at a series of events across the year, Bruch, Fehling, Hofmann, Niewöhner, Schilling and Zehrfeld will come together for the first time at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, where they will be presented to press and industry guests at the annual German Films Cocktail event, to kick-off the campaign’s second year.
2016 was a stand-out year for local film, with directors from Germany featured in competition at a large number of the most important international film festivals, including Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, Venice, San Sebastian, Shanghai and Tokyo, and German cinema finding an international audience at the box office, too.
World premiering at Cannes in 2016, the huge success of TONI ERDMANN undoubtedly put Germany back at the forefront of world cinema, appealing to cineastes via its multiple film festival appearances, winning countless awards (including 5 European Film Awards) and garnering an Oscar® nomination, as well as enjoying box office highs globally.
German films that are included in this year’s Cannes program and will hope for similar international recognition, include IN THE FADE by Faith Akin (THE EDGE OF HEAVEN, HEAD-ON) in the main Competition section, as well as WESTERN by Valeska Grisebach, which will feature in Un Certain Regard.
