It's the second time in a row that a German director has made it into the Competition of the Festival de Cannes: Fatih Akin's IN THE FADE (DE/FR, bombero international, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, corazón international) is in the running for the Palme d'Or at the 70th edition (17 - 28 May 2017). Maren Ade, who presented TONI ERDMANN in Competition last year, is part of the jury. WESTERN (DE/BG/AT, Komplizen Film) by the German director Valeska Grisebach will celebrate its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. The independent Semaine de la Critique sidebar will be presenting the animated feature film TEHRAN TABOO by Ali Soozandeh (DE/AT, Little Dream Entertainment) and the short ELA - SKETCHES ON A DEPARTURE by Oliver Adam Kusio (Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF). German Films will take its marketing campaign, FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS, which launched last year at the BFI London Film Festival, forward in its second year with the support of six of Germany’s most exciting male actors. MARKET SHOWCASE OF NEW GERMAN FILMS IN CANNES

German Films will be presenting market screenings of 23 new German films at the Marché du Film under the label of 'New German Films in Cannes' from 18 to 23 May, including seven market premieres. All of the films and screening times here...

NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER

The 20th edition of the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER program of shorts is being shown in cooperation with the FFA. The world premiere will take place in the presence of the filmmakers at the Olympia Cinema at 17:30 on Sunday, 21 May 2017. More....

GERMAN PAVILION

German Films is joining forces with Focus Germany to organize the German Pavilion in the International Village of the Marché du Film. It is a meeting place and contact point for accredited delegates who can receive competent advice at the information stands of German Films and Focus Germany.

NEW YORK WELCOMES GERMAN TALENT

New York cinema-goers were treated to eminent guests and an interactive film experience by KINO! 2017 Festival of German Films (31 March - 6 April 2017) with its program of 11 new German feature films and the NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2016 showcase of shorts. The week's highlights included German actres Martina Gedeck and director Nicolette Krebitz coming to the Sunshine Cinema in Manhattan to present their works in person. The Audience Award, supported by the FANDOR streaming service, went to ORIGINAL BLISS by Sven Taddicken.

GERMAN CINEMA IN TURKEY

2017 has seen German Films and the Goethe-Institut coming together for the third time to present the latest films from Germany in Turkey under the banner of KINO 2017 - ALMAN FILMLERI TÜRKIYE'DE. The film event cooperated with Turkey's two biggest film festivals in Istanbul and Ankara who had programmed a number of German productions and guests.

Especially in Istanbul there was an impressive audience interest in the German films...

 
 
GERMAN FILMS MOURNS THE PASSING OF MICHAEL BALLHAUS

The legendary German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus passed away on 12 April 2017 at the age of 81 in Berlin. In 2016, he was presented with the Berlinale's Golden Honorary Bear for his life's work. Michael Ballhaus worked in the course of his career with numerous leading German and international directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Volker Schlöndorff and Wolfgang Petersen. He was nominated for an Oscar® on three occasions for BROADCAST NEWS, THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS and GANGS OF NEW YORK.
