It's the second time in a row that a German director has made it into the Competition of the Festival de Cannes: Fatih Akin's IN THE FADE (DE/FR, bombero international, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, corazón international) is in the running for the Palme d'Or at the 70th edition (17 - 28 May 2017). Maren Ade, who presented TONI ERDMANN in Competition last year, is part of the jury. WESTERN (DE/BG/AT, Komplizen Film) by the German director Valeska Grisebach will celebrate its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. | GERMAN FILMS MOURNS THE PASSING OF MICHAEL BALLHAUS |
The legendary German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus passed away on 12 April 2017 at the age of 81 in Berlin. In 2016, he was presented with the Berlinale's Golden Honorary Bear for his life's work. Michael Ballhaus worked in the course of his career with numerous leading German and international directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Volker Schlöndorff and Wolfgang Petersen. He was nominated for an Oscar® on three occasions for BROADCAST NEWS, THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS and GANGS OF NEW YORK. |
