Pascale Schmidt was born in Munich in 1960 and grew up in Athens between 1969-79. She studied Philosophy, Psychology and Media Studies in Munich from 1979-82 and attended the Academy for Television & Film (HFF) in Munich from 1983-89 where she made four shorts: Kleine Briefe, Sonntag Nachmittag, Satta, Der Knacks. She made two films for ZDF's Das kleine Fernsehspiel - Zwei (1990) and Die Phase der Ruhe taeuscht (1992) - before the documentary Der Himmel kuesst die Berge - Maria & Margot Hellwig (1995).
