FAREWELL TO THE FROGS is a portrait of the late German filmmaker Ulrich Schamoni, directed by his daughter, the renowned photographer Ulrike Schamoni, on the basis of her father’s video diary.

Diagnosed with leukaemia, Ulrich Schamoni films his life until a few days before he dies in 1998. He leaves 170 hours of footage, raw and uncut.

Ulrich Schamoni always lived his life to the fullest, as an artist, art collector and free spirit. Even leukaemia couldn’t stop his unique vigor using his creativity to face the tragedy of the fatal disease. Ruthlessly, he reveals himself, full of humor and poetry. According to one of his favorite sayings:”If you walk on thin ice, you might as well dance!”

Assembled with excerpts from his works as well as biographical documents, director Ulrike Schamoni and editor Grete Jentzen aim to preserve the legacy of one of Germany’s greatest filmmakers.

FAREWELL TO THE FROGS is a documentary about his summary of life and a call to love it and embrace it – until the very end.

Ulrike Schamoni was born in Berlin in 1966. She studied Photography in Munich and worked as a freelance photographer in Berlin, Paris and New York for Vogue, The New Yorker, Stern, and GEO. Her works have been exhibited at museums and galleries in Hamburg and Berlin. FAREWELL TO THE FROGS is her directing debut.
