Tsvetana’s (57) daily routine consists of her work as a teacher of art history and caring for her mother Penka (80) who was also once a teacher and now suffers from dementia. As summer comes to an end and winter approaches, their mutual dependence on one another begins to change: Penka gradually breaks away from her daughter, even if this happens almost imperceptible. The daughter continues running the household as usual, seemingly not aware of her mother silently bidding farewell.

THE ISLE is a film about the humility and the dignity of the human soul – that is: about love.

Polina Gumiela was born in 1981 in Bulgaria. Since 2007 she has been studying film directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Her films include: CAMERA OBSCURA (2009), TANDEM (2010), and THE ISLE (2014).
