German Films Quarterly 04/2013

In every era and culture, lust and desire are always hard to control, leading to disruption and conflict. They touch the dark depths of the psyche, always with irrational elements making them a dangerous, explosive force. Throughout the ages all religions have striven to regiment and channel people’s sex lives to avoid excesses and reign in base impulses by means of divine commandments.

What stance do the world’s major religions take on sexuality and love in these fast-moving, turbulent times? What effect do their values have on love, marriage and sexual activity in this day and age?

The three-part series HEAVEN ON EARTH explores five world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Writer-directors Heinz Greuling and Hilka Sinning visit young and adult believers in Tel Aviv, Cologne, Beirut, Berlin, Istanbul, New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangkok, revealing their pleasure and their conflict. A global odyssey charting a course between love’s intoxication and taboos and a fascinating exploration of life’s most intimate and beautiful side, HEAVEN ON EARTH reveals a complex interplay between sex, power and culture.

Heinz Greuling has a doctorate in Physics and also studied Philosophy and Theology. As a science journalist he has authored various formats for ARD, WDR and ARTE since 1992. His three-part series ECO-CRIMES – CRIMES AGAINST NATURE (an international co-production with Thomas Weidenbach) won wide international acclaim and no fewer than eleven awards.

Hilka Sinning studied Journalism and worked for many years outside her native Germany, first at Radio France International and then in Spain, Italy, the USA and Argentina. Since the mid-1990s she has been an in-demand writer for broadcasters ARD, ARTE and ZDF, focusing on long documentaries and cultural and political features. In her film SCHLEIERHAFT she explored the religious positioning of women in Islam.
