Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 03/2013

An independent film in the truest sense, self-financed and a labor of love, VERGRABENE STIMMEN (BURIED VOICES) first wrapped principal photography at the end of 2011. With post-production finance and hence delivery subsequently secured, it is now in its completion phase.

Based on real events, BURIED VOICES narrates the story of Kaan, who has just been released after spending eight years in prison. Back in Berlin he now feels at home. His experiences, however, have changed not only him, but also his family and friends. Worse still, he learns that his mother has since died, which robs him of all his emotional connections, both to the city and to home.

Kaan’s father is of no help; he is preoccupied with his own life and simply paying the rent and utility bills. Kaan’s friends live a day to day existence, also emotionally unrooted. They are just as lethargic as they ever were, but in the intervening time they have simply grown only older, not wiser.

His emotions cauterized, Kaan is unable to feel. It is only when he holds his old cutthroat razor that he knows he is still alive. Unemployed and all but unemployable, he does, however, possess a driver’s licence. It is this which leads him to become a chauffeur for the local pimp, Mr. Omar. To be precise, Kaan chauffeurs Mr. Omar’s whores to and from their customers. It is a task Kaan fuflills so well that he wins Mr. Omar’s approval and takes a step up the ladder, and one closer to hell, becoming an enforcer, demanding money with menaces; pay up or else! The further Kaan sinks into criminality, the harder he punishes himself with the razor blade!

Paying regular visits to his mother’s grave, the one place where he finds a semblance of peace in the maelstrom of his life, Kaan one day sees Aenna, a mysterious beauty who is hiding cassette tapes in a tomb. By remote control, on autopilot, he steals them. The recordings she has made sound like a story he knows only too well.
