Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 02/2012

“Never change a winning team” is a maxim the makers of Matthias Schweighöfer’s second outing as director have certainly held true to. “Around 80% of the crew were with us on WHAT A MAN, Matthias’ first film as director,” producer Dan Maag observes. “And when we started shooting on the new film, it was as if we had just finished the first one and were simply carrying on. There’s a real family atmosphere.”

WHAT A MAN’s co-screenwriter Doron Wisotzky delivered the screenplay for BREAK UP MAN on his own this time and without Schweighöfer collaborating by borrowing heavily from his own biography.

“The story is more high concept and complete fiction,” Maag explains, pointing out that actor Milan Peschel (who made such an impact in Andreas Dresen’s harrowing cancer drama STOPPED ON TRACK last year and won the German Film Award 2012 for his role in the film) was uppermost in the producers’ minds during the work on the script to play the other half of the ‘odd couple’ with Schweighöfer in the new film. “I think one can say that Milan in this comic role is a real discovery,” Maag adds.

In his second directorial outing, Schweighöfer appears in front of the camera as Paul, a professional “separator” who works for an agency in Berlin assisting couples in breaking up. The end of each relationship brings him one step nearer to his long-awaited promotion as a partner in the company. That is, until he encounters the extremely clingy Toto who, in one fell swoop, turns Paul’s career plans and life topsy-turvy....

BREAK UP MAN is Panteleon Films’ second project with the German office of US major 20th Century Fox and has a cast including Nadja Uhl, Heiner Lauterbach and French Canadian actress Catherine De Léan, who was nominated for a Canadian Genie Award for her performance in Anne Emond’s NUIT #1 this year.

For the future, Schweighöfer has an exclusive four-picture deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment and is set to begin production in late summer on FRAU ELLA, from a screenplay by Dirk Ahner, to be directed by Markus Goller and with Schweighöfer in one of the leads.
