Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 02/2014

Berlin-based production house X Filme Creative Pool has had a busy start to this year with shooting in Northern Russia for Stefan Krohmer’s GIRL ON ICE, in North Africa for Tom Tykwer’s A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING, and in North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin for Oskar Roehler’s latest feature PUNK (TOD DEN HIPPIES, ES LEBE DER PUNK). PUNK is the fourth collaboration between X Filme Creative Pool and Roehler following AGNES AND HIS BROTHERS, LULU & JIMI and SOURCES OF LIFE. “Oskar is really one of the few German filmmakers who has remained an auteur and director writing his own screenplays,” says producer Stefan Arndt. “He has his own film language which he uses to tell genuine stories about Germany.”

In the new film, Roehler travels back in time to the West Berlin of the early 1980s and the birth of punk. Tom Schilling, coming off the success of his award-winning performances in OH BOY and GENERATION WAR, plays Robert who escapes the mustiness of his town in the provinces and the hippie mania of his teachers – to a new world of freedom, sex, drugs and weird folk in the Western half of the divided city.

“I think that it’s quite unique what we are doing because it’s not a case of looking back in a nostalgic way at this period,” Arndt explains. “We want to be as authentic as we can, and, at the same time, the film describes how the foundations for today’s culture in the worlds of art and music were established then.”

Ironically, the production team found more suitable locations in North Rhine-Westphalia to stand in for West Berlin of the early 1980s. “It meant that we could be more honest to the story and more authentic in our desire to create the hippie and punk periods,” he continues. “Formally, we are going to use certain techniques which have never been used in German cinema before to create that particular authenticity.”

In addition, PUNK will feature Schilling with fellow cast members Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht and Frederick Lau specially recording a number of punk songs for the film.
