German Films Quarterly 02/2014

Marie Wilke is currently in post-production on her first feature-length documentary STAATSDIENER which follows four young people during their first year of studies at a police academy in Saxony-Anhalt and the first experiences of being ‘on the beat’.

“Marie has been working as an artistic academic assistant at the University of Film & Television (HFF) in Babelsberg for the past nine years and a part of her work is to develop a film project,” producer Matthias Miegel explains.

Getting permission to film within the seemingly hermetically sealed confines of the academy didn’t prove a problem for Wilke and her team. “To begin with, the project was part of her academic work,” he continues, “and she had also made direct contact with the academy’s director who gave her full support and cooperation for the film.”

“It meant that Marie was able to film things that you wouldn’t normally get to see in a place that is normally ‘off limits’ to outside people. What is certain from what we have seen in the rough cut so far is that the ‘behind the scenes’ here will have far more substance than what you get to see in the reports on the private TV channels,” Miegel notes.

Wilke studied at the Zelig School for Documentary, Television & Media in Italy’s Bolzano and at the University of Arts (UdK) in Berlin before starting work at the HFF in Babelsberg in 2004 with a specialization on directing documentaries.

Kundschafter Filmproduktion was founded in 2011 by four HFF graduates – director Robert Thalheim and producers Andreas Banz, Dirk Engelhardt, and Matthias Miegel – and they have already completed their first two projects: Thalheim’s last feature ELTERN and Sung-Hyung Cho’s documentary DIE LIEBE IN DEN ZEITEN DER MAUERN.

The Berlin-based company is developing new feature projects by Thalheim – the spy drama KUNDSCHAFTER and DON’T BE A STRANGER, co-written by Jane Ainscough and partly set in the US –, Barbara Albert’s HEXEN, the German-Turkish co-production THERE, OUTSIDE, and Dietrich Brüggemann’s comedy MASCARA.
