Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 02/2014

After the successful collaboration with STUDIOCANAL on the distribution of FRIENDS FOREVER based on Helme Heine’s children’s books about three animal friends, Halle-based MotionWorks decided to work together with the Berlin-based distributor-producer on the development of a second feature film. Danish animator Jesper Møller, who co-directed the 2008 feature film with producer Tony Loeser, wrote the screenplay for MULLEWAPP – A PIG'S TAIL which was then further adapted by Armin Völckers.

“This time round, Mullewapp is in danger from the plans of the wild boar Horst von Borst and his gang,” Loeser explains. “Horst seems a nice chap to start with, but then he shows that he is really only interested in taking over the farmyard and the livestock there. So, it is up to the three friends Johnny Mauser, Franz von Hahn and Waldemar to save the day.”

This second film sees Loeser co-directing with HFF Babelsberg graduate Theresa Strozyk who had previously worked on MotionWorks’ Canadian-German animation series ARTZOOKA – PAPERBAG GIRL as well as co-directing and art directing the last MULLEWAPP TV series for pubcaster WDR.

“Theresa had already brought fresh new aspects into the portrayal of the MULLEWAPP world in the TV series and she has experience of working with CGI,“ Loeser explains. “It’s an ideal collaboration because she comes from another generation who has a different take on things.“

In addition, MotionWorks has been reunited for this project with the Luxembourg animation studio Melusine Productions who had already worked with Loeser on the animation series DIE ABENTEUER DES JUNGEN MARCO POLO. “They are handling the storyboard, 3D set modelling and layouts, while Studio Rakete in Hamburg and Lava Labs in NRW are looking after the compositing,“ he says. “And all of the animation will be done in Germany.“

Scheduled to be released in Germany in 2016, MULLEWAPP – A PIG'S TAIL will not only feature CGI, but also be shot in stereoscopic 3D.
