Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 02/2012

Thomas Müller is a normal guy, living with his pushy wife Sabine and rebellious son Alexander in Normsen, right in the middle of Germany. His wonderfully regulated life is average and he is averagely happy. So far, so good, or, rather, average, until he suddenly loses his job and the prospect of becoming very downwardly mobile, together with the crushing interest payments on the house, throws his entire life into a tailspin.

Rescue, if that is the right word, comes in the shape of Stefan, an eloquent, well-dressed, gentleman who offers Thomas employment with his company, Industries Unlimited, an international service-provider, which conducts product and market testing.

Thomas is more than successful: he starts to believe he has real power! That the products he tests really do appear the next day on the supermarket shelves! That he is being quoted on TV and his political preferences are genuine themes in the upcoming elections!

Slowly, and thanks to the efforts of his son, Alexander, Thomas comes to realize Industries Unlimited is merely a front, established to spy on his every move, thought and word. It turns out that Thomas is not just average, he is the most average German there is! While the secret forces do everything in their power to keep him exactly as they want him, Thomas determines to end his old life and start a new one in freedom.

KÖNIG VON DEUTSCHLAND (KING OF GERMANY) is written and directed by David Dietl. If certainly the surname rings a bell, this is because he is the son of writer-director Helmut Dietl. Having paid his dues and come up the hard way (he has worked as a video-operator, camera assistant, assistant director and assistant editor on various productions, including most notedly JOHN RABE), he also studied Directing at Berlin's dffb film school, making this his feature debut.
