Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 04/2013

Berlin’s planned new international airport BER may have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past year. But now some good news: the future airport has played host to its first film shoot with the production of Sylke Enders’ SCHÖNEFELD BOULEVARD from August to September.

“Originally, the story was supposed to take place with the airport up and running,” recalls Enders who came to wider attention with her Silver Lola-winning feature film KROKO in 2004. “However, when we saw that the airport wasn’t going to open before 2014 at the earliest, I decided to change the screenplay so that it was still during the construction.”

SCHÖNEFELD BOULEVARD centers on the overweight teenager Cindy (portrayed by ‘new face’ Julia Jendroßek) who lives on the outskirts of Berlin in a seemingly dead-end existence with her bitchy ‘best’ friends, her little dog Werner and the fatalistic neighbor Danny. But she encounters the promise of another exciting world after meeting some foreign engineers working on the new airport….

“I don’t see a character like Cindy as being just a victim,“ Enders explains. “She is treated this way by her surroundings, people don’t expect much from her or think she is capable of much, they just use her. She puts up with it until the point when she has a new experience unlike anything she has known before, and something changes in her.“

“As in KROKO, I am interested in the little everyday things rather than the big drama,“ she continues. “One can see the conflicts experienced by the youth, and those of the adults aren’t that much different. Watching the film, adults will be reminded of their failings and sufferings.“

SCHÖNEFELD BOULEVARD is one of the first projects to be made under the new "Leuchtstoff" initiative launched last year by local public broadcaster RBB and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

“The label was created for stories from the region about the region,“ RBB commissioning editor Cooky Ziesche says. “Sylke’s film was thus a perfect match.“
