NOT WITHOUT US! follows children from around the world on their way from home to school. The children and their personalities are as varied as the landscapes in which they live: The blind Rebekka, who uses a cane to tap her way across the train platforms and underpasses of the rural idyll of her Swiss hometown; the Austrian skiing ace Vincent, who every morning zips down the steep slopes of the Feuerkogel mountain; the HIV-positive Luniko, who lives in Khayelithsa, a township with over a million inhabitants, and can never walk the streets to school without fear; the small philosopher and conservationist Enjo, who feels deeply connected with his world between Lake Walen and the peaks of the Churfirsten; Sanjana, an inhabitant of a red-light district in India; the intellectual Sai, who has left India behind for New York City and now commutes between Flushing, Queens, and Manhattan; the orphan Alphonsine, who despite her tragic life story walks through her village in Ivory Coast with her head held high; and the Laotian To, a boy from the province of Luang Prabang who doesn't find school difficult but does his two-hour journey by boat down the Mekong and then on a tuk-tuk bus, through a region razed by slash-and-burn farmers. The children share their hopes and plans with us, and tell us of their dreams as well as their fears—of child labor, prostitution, war, and crime. All are worried about the destruction of nature. They want to change the world, and long for security and happiness.

Perla, from Iceland, puts it in a nutshell: "All children want someone they can trust, who helps them in life; a family as well as friends, who take care of them and love them like parents do. Nothing is more important than that." A film about the future of the planet - a future that these children are going to shape.
