German Films Quarterly 03/2013

Production began at the end of May in the MPN Studios near Cologne on Wolfgang Becker’s long-anticipated next feature film after his 1993 box-office and critical success GOOD BYE, LENIN!.

The tragicomedy ME & KAMINSKI, based on Daniel Kehlmann’s eponymous novel, also sees Becker reunited with his star from GOOD BYE, LENIN!, Daniel Brühl, who plays a vain, but unsuccessful arts journalist Sebastian Zöllner who intends to write a biography about Manuel Kaminski who caused a sensation in the art world as a blind painter, but has since fallen somewhat into obscurity.

Sebastian visits the old man in his isolated home and promises to take him to see his childhood sweetheart just once more – little does the young journalist know that the crafty old man has his own agenda...

As producer Uwe Schott explains, Becker wasn’t idle during the past 10 years: “Wolfgang is passionate about so many different things like art and photography. As founder and shareholder of X Filme, he is of course involved as a valuable counsel in all our projects. He spent a lot of time working on adapting this novel for the screen and then brought author Thomas Wendrich onboard to work on the screenplay. Daniel was clear as the journalist the minute Wolfgang read the novel, but we had many intensive casting sessions throughout Europe before we decided on Jesper Christensen for Kaminski and Amir Casar for his daughter Miriam.“

Schott adds that Becker had always planned to have Belgium as the destination of the story’s journey through Europe from Kaminski’s home in the Alps: “He wanted the coast to be on the North Sea because it is much rawer than the Mediterranean.“

ME & KAMINSKI, which was also shooting on location in North Rhine-Westphalia, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Berlin, is now the third adaptation of one of Daniel Kehlmann’s novels after Isabel Kleefeld’s FAME and Detlev Buck’s MEASURING THE WORLD.
