Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 04/2012

Guram, an unsuccessful director and actor from Georgia, lives in Stuttgart. He gets along by doing odd jobs and hiring out his African roommate, Ngudu, as a lover to Swabian women.

One day he gets a call from his son Rati, from Canada, who finally wants to see him again, after ten years. Problem is, Guram is so ashamed at his lack of success that he’s been putting Rati off again and again. Now he has to prevent his son seeing how pathetically his absent father is getting through life, whatever it takes.

Luckily, Guram has friends. He might not be successful, but he can sure fake it! Suddenly he’s a happy and wealthy artist, a theatrical director with Ngudu as his personal assistant, who also supplies him with the temporarily empty villa of a client as well as her luxury car. Fellow actress Mia plays his wife. It all goes brilliantly, at first! But the fraud fails, the lies are exposed and Guram stands exposed before his son.

Nonetheless, there is still some kind of bond between Guram and Rati, which becomes much stronger when, both working as film extras, the latter is manhandled too roughly by an actor. Guram loses his cool, to put it mildly! Then wonder of wonders, his furious outburst has been witnessed by the studio bosses and the extra gone wild is offered a real role in the film.

Rati can now finally be a little bit proud of his old man. Somehow, the highs and lows of Guram’s chaotic everyday existence, his fighting spirit and courage of a desperate man, reassure his son. The boy’s friendly relationship with Ngudu, who can understand the boy without having to say a word, also causes him to develop sympathy and acceptance for his father’s somewhat screwed-up existence.

Slowly, Rati also opens up and starts to explain something about himself. It turns out the boy is also carrying his secrets around with him, for, as the saying goes, the apple does not fall far from the tree...
