Oliver Schmitz was born in 1960 in South Africa and studied Fine Arts in Cape Town. Active both in writing and directing, he has repeatedly treated themes from his native country, such as AIDS and apartheid. Among his award-winning films are MAPANTSULA (1987), JO'BURG STORIES (documentary, 1997), and HIJACK STORIES (2000). He was invited to shoot a segment of the episodic film PARIS, JE T'AIME (2006). His recent projects include the award-winning comedy series TÜRKISCH FÜR ANFÄNGER (TV, 2005, 2006, 2008) and DOCTOR'S DIARY (TV, 2006, 2007).
