Roland Emmerich was born in 1955 in Stuttgart. After finishing high school, he
attended the Art College in Stuttgart and later the Academy for Television & Film in Munich (HFF). The science fiction thriller The Noah's Ark Principle was his graduation project. Emmerich went on to script and direct Joey (1984/85). Emmerich's preference for entertainment spectacles in the tradition of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas became the driving force for his films Moon 44 (1989), Universal Soldier (1991/92), Stargate (1994/95) and recently culminated in the hits Independence Day (1995/96) Godzilla (1998)and The Patriot (2000).
