What starts as a relationship film, a conflict between dependency and freedom, takes a determined genre twist into a psychological thriller about suppressed guilt when, on the hottest day of the year, Anna (41) and her boyfriend Stefan (32) drive to her birthplace on a sad mission: her aunt died recently and Anna has to clear out her parents’ house where the deceased lady lived and which is scheduled for demolition. To that end they meet Bernd, Anna’s former boyfriend, who has brought along his husband Marc, a respected psychoanalyst.

Here, in the countryside, Anna enjoys their company, goes for walks and joins in group cooking activities. If only the two men’s open relationship, which she views skeptically, and Marc, who plays psychological games with her and shows mounting interest in Stefan, were not so irritating.

To make it worse, Marc takes macabre pleasure in recalling a summer 25 years ago, when an acquaintance of Anna and Marc’s fell from a roof and died, something for which she feels somewhat guilty. The memory of the event and its consequences affects her more than she thought. In fact, it takes on a life of its own. She also feels she is losing Stefan, who, sure enough, tells her he wants to stay with the two men for a bit longer.

Driving home alone, Anna has a near miss with a... deer? Shaken, she decides to return to claim Stefan for her own. But there’s no sign of him. Bernd and Marc deny all knowledge of the guy, acting as if they and only they had spent the previous days together. The, to them, mentally unstable Anna flips out and is almost run over by a red sports car, the same one she drives!

She returns to the house to see... herself and the others on the terrace! It is as if she has travelled back two days in time! She follows the four of them, including her other self, sees Marc moving in on Stefan, and decides to act... by killing the old Anna!
