Cold Homeland

Seven hundred years ago the region on the Baltic between the Vistula and Memel rivers was populated by a people - the Pruss - who later gave their name to the area: Prussia. In 1945 the northern part of the region fell to the Soviet Union, becoming the Kalingradskaja Oblast: a Russian enclave wedged in between Lithuania and Poland. The film portrays the life of the people of this region, people of different generations and the most disparate backgrounds ...

Volker Koepp was born in Stettin (Szczecin)/Poland in 1944 and studied at the Technical University of Dresden from 1963-1965. In 1966, he entered the film school at Potsdam-Babelsberg and obtained his diploma as a writer and director in 1969. He was a director at the DEFA documentary film studio from 1970-1991 and has won prizes at Cracow, Oberhausen, Tampere and Mannheim. He has been a guest lecturer at the Film & Television Academy (HFF) in Babelsberg since 1993.
