Production Report featured in
German Films Quarterly 02/2014

Paul, Christine and Sarah Volger have long since ceased to exist as a family. Paul has moved in with a colleague, hoping to restart his music career, Christine has a new partner, whom she loves more than Paul and is much better suited to her. Their daughter, Sarah, suffers greatly from the emotional turmoil: lost and in the middle of puberty, she is capable of anything, as events subsequently prove. Following a fierce row with her mature-beyond-her-years friend Charlie, only a backpack remains floating on a lonely lake. Sarah confesses immediately: she pushed Charlie. Nobody loves her, nobody wants her.

This desperate act, however, now gains Sarah her parents’ undivided attention. Paul and Christine are, exceptionally, united for once: their unstable daughter would not survive a possible prison sentence or the ordeal of the schoolyard. The ‘accident’ is covered up, nobody must find out; not the police, not even the parents’ new partners and especially not Charlie’s single-parent father. However, it is this last one who notices something is not right. Paul and Christine have only one way out: they denounce the man, who has a criminal record anyway, to the police for being responsible for his own daughter’s disappearance.

The tangled web of lies, secrecy and deceit proves fatal to Paul and Christine’s new relationships, which crumble before them. They are so busy with their own problems they are also unable to see what the viewer long since knows: behind Sarah’s story there is another truth.

When Charlie’s father finds his daughter’s rucksack at Christine’s home it unleashes a chain of events, the outcome of which is worse than Paul, Christine and Sarah could have ever imagined.
