Dessau, East Germany, 1985: 18-year-old Frank and his friends have been infected by Breakdance fever. At first they are suspiciously monitored by the ruling regime. But when the socialist government realizes that it cannot stop them, they try to exploit them instead.

"Under the guise of 'acrobatic show dancing,' breakdancing is brought to the Communist masses in DESSAU DANCERS, from director Jan Martin Scharf. Combining a certain nostalgia for East Germany a la GOOD BYE, LENIN! with the impressive moves of youth-driven dance films such as the STEP UP and STREET DANCE franchises, this entertaining, 1980s-set dramedy recycles tropes from several genres without ever becoming a single whole, a mainstream crowdpleaser with pretensions of socio-political and historical relevance." (The Hollywood Reporter)

Jan Martin Scharf was born in Cologne in 1974. He studied at the New York Film Academy and at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) from 1998-2004, graduating with TRUTH OR DARE (2004, in co-direction with Arne Nolting) which won numerous international awards. Also active as a writer, a selection of his other films includes: the episode THE DRUNKEN WOMAN in the film FRIDAY NIGHT (2002), DER BAUM (short, 2005), numerous episodes of the series ALARM FÜR COBRA 11 (TV, 2005-2010), episodes of IK1 - TOURISTEN IN GEFAHR (TV, 2009), DESSAU DANCERS (2014), and the series WEINBERG (TV, 2014).
