Eugenia Ginzburg, a literature professor, is a member of the local Communist Party. Her husband and two sons live privileged lives of Communist Apparatchiks. With the assassination of Kirov, their world changes. Eugenia is interrogated during months of sleep deprivation and isolation, and is asked to denounce associates, which she refuses to do. She is unjustly sentenced to 10 years hard labor in a Siberian gulag. In the camp, under desperate conditions, Eugenia learns her older son has died of starvation. That night she leaves her hut, and not wishing to go on living, she lies down in the snow and drifts off to sleep. Eugenia is found half-dead and admitted to the camp hospital. There she meets Anton Walter, the German camp doctor. She doesn’t want to be helped by him. She just wishes to die. But gradually, she does come back to life. And in spite of the horrible conditions around them, Eugenia and Anton fall in love.
